Editor’s note: As part of the
1000 Points of Light campaign,
President George H. W. Bush
designated April as National
Volunteer Month. The True Cit
izen is dedicated to promoting
and celebrating volunteerism
in Burke County throughout
the month.
Jo Ann Bolton, Janice
O’Quinn and Hilda Royal are
sold on volunteerism.
The three women make up
part of the Burke Medical Cen
ter Volunteers group. Together,
they run the gift shop.
Bolton, a retired school
teacher, has volunteered at
the gift shop for more than
six years. She also works the
medical center’s front recep
tion desk and acts as gift shop
treasurer from home.
“I wanted to benefit my
community, the sick and the
well,” she said. “I felt like my
job here was to meet people,
greet people, and make them
feel at home.”
She also volunteers for the
Burke County Archives.
Royal began volunteering at
the gift shop after she retired
from A & W Oil Company.
Volunteering gives her a sense
of purpose.
“It gave me something to
do,” she said. “I can help
people.”
O’Quinn manages the gift
shop and purchases the in
ventory. The stay-at-home
mother began volunteering at
the medical center in 1996, but
selfless acts have always been
a part of her inner being.
“I was a candy striper in high
school,” she said. “It’s been a
blessing all these years doing
this.”
The gift shop features unique
items that can’t be found in
ordinary stores. The women
pointed out patrons do not have
to have family in the hospital
to shop for gifts. And, the vol
unteers provide gift-wrapping
free-of-charge.
The proceeds from sales
provide scholarships for nurs
ing and healthcare students.
Money is also used to purchase
hospital equipment.
“In 2000, our administrator
at that time, called me to the
office and let us know that at
that point in time, we had given
well over $800,000 to this
hospital through buying equip
ment,” O’Quinn said. “You can
imagine what it is now.”
Any high school graduate
over the age of 18 who wishes
to volunteer should get an ap
plication from the gift shop
located adjacent to the Burke
Medical Center lobby.
“I think any volunteer wants
to give back to the public,”
Bolton said. “It’s very reward
ing to give back.”

They may hail from Hilton
Head, but Deas-Guyz offer an
entertaining set of music that
stretches beyond that of a typi
cal beach band.
As the second installment in
the Waynesboro-Burke Con
cert Series (WBCS), Deas-
Guyz hit the stage with a mix
of old Motown, rhythm and
blues, pop, rock, reggae and
dance beats, featuring the
sounds of the Temptations, The
Drifters, Smokey Robinson,
Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley
classics as well as Pharrell
Williams and Montell Jordan.
The band officially formed
in 2000 (as Nu World Beat) and
evolved to the tight group now
known as Deas-Guyz. Each
member adds a rich and varied
background to the mix. A fa
vorite group in the Carolinas,
they often perform at The Jazz
Comer in Hilton Head. The art
ists bring many years of prior
experience performing profes
sionally in other bands, clubs,
colleges, various festivals and
hundreds of private functions
and wedding receptions.
They often travel to other lo
cations such as Pawley's Island,
Newberry, Mount Pleasant and
Greenville in South Carolina
and have ventured to several
hot spots in Georgia as well.
Deas-Guyz have performed
in Chicago, Orlando, Las Ve
gas, New York, Knoxville and
several other locations around
the United States, including
charitable events in their be
loved Hilton Head.
The WBCS welcomes Deas-
Guyz to Burke County High
School on April 15, beginning
at 7 p.m. The concert promises
to provide a wide range of mu
sical fare from oldies to cutting
edge dance beats, perfect for
all ages. Tickets are available
online at burkeconcert.org or
by calling 706-526-5062.
The show is sponsored by
Queensborough National
Bank. Social distancing guide
lines are being followed.
