competition for Bears

Burke County High School’s
tennis teams saw some tough
competitors in region matches
last week.
On March 30, the teams
played Morgan County with
both falling 5-0.
“They had some very strong
players that hit the ball incred
ibly well, and it was tough for
us to pull out a win,” said head
coach Laurie Dickey. “I am
so proud though of how all
of the kids hung in there and
competed. The scores don't do
their efforts justice, but they
all played hard. Especially
notable during this match were
all of the girls singles play
ers. They had so many games
that went back and forth that
could've easily gone in our
favor, but didn't work out for
us. I think everyone will be
better prepared if we get to face
them for the finals in the region
tournament.”
Against ARC, the girls won
5-0, and the boys team fell 1-4,
with the doubles team of Pres
ton Adkins and Ethan Coalson
bringing the only victory.
“These guys battled back and
split sets so they had to play a
third set to decide the match,”
Dickey said. “Preston has been
very impressive on the net and
they have grown together as
a duo this season. They both
played really hard against Mor
gan County the day before as
well so I was happy they could
win this hard fought match.”
As the Bears prepare for the
region tournament on April 14,
Dickey says there are several
things that will be their focus
focus during practice in order
to get them better prepared.
“Having played all of the
teams, we now have a better
idea of how they play and what
we can do to be as successful
as possible,” she said, adding
that the girls will get a bye in
the first round since they are
the second seed, and the boys
will go in as the third seed and
face Thomson. “They should
make it past Thomson with no
trouble. I'm just looking for
them to play their best and try
hard so that both teams will go
to the first round of state.”
Bears defeat Jenkins 18-2

Thanks to a hot bat from
senior Evan Richardson, Burke
County’s Bears sealed an 18-2
victory over Jenkins County on
Thursday.
Richardson knocked doubles
in the first, second and fourth
innings, batting in four runs,
and the Bears collectively
earned 11 runs in the second
inning alone to claim the win.
Batters contributing to the
impressive inning with RBIs
included Marshall Flowers,
Tripp Cibak, Dylan Dixon,
Chris Buxton and Jed Osborn.
On the day, Burke County
racked up 15 total hits and
was led by Richardson, who
in addition to his 3 doubles and
4 RBIs, scored 3 runs; Daniel
Brown, double, 2 singles and 3
RBIs; Osborn, double, single,
RBI, 2 runs scored; Buxton,
triple, single,2 RBIs and 2 runs
scored; and Jahkari Howard,
single, 4 runs scored, 3 walks
and 2 stolen bases.
Myles Heatwole took the
win for the Bears, allowing 2
hits and 2 runs over 4 innings
while walking 3 and striking
out 5.
Howard threw an inning in
relief, allowing no hits or runs
and striking out a batter.
“We had a big day swinging
the bat without committing a
single error defensively,” said
head coach Billy Marchman.
“All our guys who traveled en
joyed some playing time, and
it was the ending we wanted
headed into spring break week.
As we return we will have
a huge week with Morgan
County, a top 10 team in Geor
gia. Morgan boast a 17-4 with a
12-0 region record. Our Bears
stand 14-6 with a 6-2 region
record. Morgan, however, will
finish the last two weeks of
the season playing against us
and Harlem, who are the other
top two teams in this division.
We will close out the regular
season the following week with
a three-game series with Rich
mond Academy and making
up a single rain out game with
Cross Creek before entering
the state playoffs.”
Remember the Titans
The Titans brought home the championship and the rings to go with it. The team, coach by Billy
Marchman and Ben Ellison, went undefeated in the tournament held at Citizens Park in Aiken,
South Carolina, defeating South Carolina Select 16-1, North Augusta River Jackets 8-7 and 16-12
and Gilbert South Carolina Tribe 23-6. Pictured are, from left, kneeling: Colt Weatherford, Jace

Clark advances to state in tennis
Morgan Clark, a senior at Edmund Burke Academy, placed
third in the Georgia Independent School Association AA Region
Tennis Tournament, earning her a spot in the state tourney on
April 27. “Morgan excels at everything she does,’ said coach
Jamie Montgomery. "She is a strong player that preservers and
stays calm under pressure. She’s a true leader on and off the
court and is an excellent example of what it is to be a Spartan.”
