It may not always be about
winning, but that’s just what
Edmund Burke’s middle
school girls track team did at
every meet, ultimately claim
ing the region championship
after an undefeated season.
“Track has been so extreme
ly exciting at both the middle
school and varsity levels,” said
coach Monika Mobley. “The
middle school girls won all
five track meets in which they
have participated and were
named region champs at the
Briarwood meet. Many of this
year's standouts are eighth-
graders who will participate
at the varsity region meet and
likely qualify for state. The fun
has only just begun.”
Kensy Felix brought home
two first place finishes: the
1600-meter (6 minutes, 7 sec
onds) and the 800-m (2:46).
Payton Palmer also earned
two first place finishes, one in
the 400-m (67.70) and one in
high jump (4’8). Carly Johnson
finished first in the long jump
(12’6.5), second in the 400-m
(68.70) and third in the 200-m
(31.39).
In discus, Addison Riggs
was the winner with a throw of
85’3; she placed third in shot
put. Braelynn Reeves placed
first in the 200-m (30.78),
second in high jump and third
in long jump (11’7). Leila
Eastmead finished second in
the 100-m hurdles (19.22) and
third in the 100-m (14.53).
The girls 4x400 relay team
also place first (4:42).
In boys track, Nash Parker

placed second in the 800-m and
second in the 1600-m (6:06).
Davis Brown claimed second
in the 400-m (67.00) and third
in shot put (26’6).
“It was a cold, windy day in
Warrenton, but it was such a
blessing to watch our athletes
perform and have a solid show
ing,” said coach Daniel Han
nah. “Tmproud of the effort all
of our boys and girls put into
this middle school season, and
congrats to our middle school
girls on claiming the middle
school region championship.”

Professional athlete Divante
Jones brings boxing fitness to
the Burke County Recreation
Department.
Jones began instructing chil
dren and adults before the
pandemic hit.
“I provide physical and fit
ness training for boxing be
cause some kids know that
in that area of the Rec Center
there is not a lot to do,” Jones
said. “It’s a stress reliever and
teaches them discipline as
well.”
Now that the numbers of
COVID-19 cases are decreas
ing, Jones hopes to see more
people taking advantage of the
free-of-charge activity. Partici
pants do not have to desire a
career in boxing to benefit from
the workout, he said.
The Monday through Thurs
day program is open to anyone
from 7 years old to adult age.
The hours are from 3 p.m. to 8
p.m. Instruction is held at the
Burke County Boxing Gym.
No registration is necessary.
“It’s a nice program,” Jones
said. “Augusta has a boxing
gym as well, and that’s where
I grew up, it definitely kept
me busy off the streets and I
am trying to bring that same
positive influence as well to the
Burke County Boxing Gym.”
Divante competed in his 12th
professional fight March 20.
The judges unanimously de
clared him the winner. His next
match is May 30 in Augusta. If
he wins, he will compete for
The United States Lightweight
title in July in Greenville, S .C.
His record currently stands at
11 wins and 2 losses.
