A feature story published April 7 incorrectly stated
the Burke Medical Volunteer group had given well over
$800,000 to Burke Medical Center. The story should have
read that the group had given well over $100,000.
Additionally, an article in the same publication incorrectly
stated that State Rep Barry Fleming had been fired as Ran
dolph County attorney.
The True citizen apologizes for any confusion this may
have caused.
Editor’s note: As part of the
1000 Points of Light campaign,
President George H. W. Bush
designated April as National
Volunteer Month. The True Cit
izen is dedicated to promoting
and celebrating volunteerism
in Burke County throughout
the month.
A local couple offers their
services as they labor in love.

“I do anything they need,”
Carol said, and added that she

In the past, Carol and Jesse
were active in the Main Street
America program, bringing
things like trees, benches
and trashcans to downtown
Waynesboro. Jesse, president
of the First National Bank of
Waynesboro, participates in
the Downtown Organization
of Retailers and the Downtown
Development Authority.
As a couple, Jesse and Carol
offer finance classes at the cen

budgeting and ways to save
money. “We do all kinds of
practical things on how to save
money. Jesse advises them that

The center offers free preg
nancy tests, domestic violence
classes, parenting classes, and
counseling. Women who attend
classes earn points that can be
used to purchase necessary
baby items. Dads who attend
the classes earn double points,
Carol said. “We have every
thing from beds, to changing
tables, to sheets to car seats.
Then we have a whole room
of clothes.”
The pregnancy center is re
cruiting new volunteers. Any
one interested in volunteering
for simpler tasks should call

Spring training for more
intense positions takes place
at the West Augusta Care Preg

Those interested in attending
should call 706-724-5531 to

“Men can get involved
through teaching and donat

there so that fathers who come
can see men who care.”

The children donated food to
displaced and homeless people.
The nonprofit intends to
make the cooking camp an an
