OBITUARIES
Virginia Aubrey Bargeron
Terry Tyrone Foreman
Virginia Aubrey Bargeron, 78, died Wednesday, April 7,
2021. Born August 5, 1942, in Augusta, GA, she was the
daughter of the late Dr. Everett
A. Bargeron and the late Virginia
Bargeron Fulford.
Known as “Ginny” to many, she
was a graduate of Waynesboro
High School. Ginny received a
Bachelor of Science degree in
education from UGA, where she
was a Phi Mu. She also later re
ceived Master’s and Specialist’s
degrees in library science.
Ginny was a librarian in the
Richmond County Public Schools
for 28 years. She worked part-
time as a librarian at Fort Gordon for 10 of those years. Ginny
loved to read and had a genuine thirst for knowledge and
learning new things. She loved to travel in her younger years.
A woman of strong conviction, she enjoyed conversing with
others about the Bible and her faith in God. She was a member
of Asbury United Methodist Church for many years and was
actively involved in the ministries and church services at her
residence, Augusta Gardens. Ginny never met a stranger and
made all who met her feel special with her infectious person
ality. Full of life and laughter, she was always interested in
others. She was a treasure to all who knew her, especially to
her nieces and nephews, who adored her.
Survivors include her sister, Patricia Fastinger of San Anto
nio, TX; brother-in-law, Thomas Y. Harris of Crawford, GA;
two nieces, Paige Colquitt (Steve) of Watkinsville, GA and
Suzanne Mingledorff (Fred) of Midway, GA; three nephews,
Ty Harris of Newnan, GA, Steve Harris (Jessica) of Athens,
GA and John Fastinger (Zoila) of San Antonio, TX; and several
great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ginny
was preceded in death by her cherished sister, Peggy Harris.
A special thank you to the nurses, doctors, and staff at Uni
versity Hospital of Augusta for their love and dedication in
caring for Ginny. Another special thank you to the staff and
residents of Augusta Gardens Assisted Fiving Facility for
their continuous love, devotion, and care for Ginny during
her stay there.

Proposed bill makes image-based revenge a felony
SHELLIE SMITLEY
thetruecitizen.shellie@gmail.com
Scorned lovers should think
twice about posting nude pho
tos of their exes on the web.
The Georgia Senate agreed
to changes made to Senate Bill
78, sponsored by Sen. Harold
Jones II (D - Augusta) March
31. If signed by Governor
Brian Kemp, SB78 makes it
a felony to post photographs
or videos expressing nudity or
sexually explicit conduct by an
adult without their permission
and as a means of harassment.
The bill includes falsely cre
ated still images or videos.
The first offense is consid
ered a misdemeanor of a high
and aggravated nature. Second
offense is considered to be a
felony, punishable by 1-5 years
of incarceration and/or a fine
up to $100,000.
“Revenge porn, or image-
based sexual abuse, is a form of
sexual abuse, and it is a serious
crime,” Jones said in an April 7
press release. “When a person
takes someone’s sexually ex
plicit images and places those
images on a pornographic
website, their behavior is not
adequately addressed by the
current misdemeanor punish
ment.
The bill includes posting
nudity or sexually explicit
conduct by an adult posted by
electronic transmission or post
ing to any web page that is ac
cessible to the general public.
Williams
the now-hoarse canary has
been singing. Far too many
blame the victims.
I constantly hear, “If they
had just complied with the
officer, they would be alive.”
While there may be some level
of credence to that statement,
it is not the just, fair, and equi
table way to mitigate the im
pact of an unjust police action.
Non-compliance shouldn’t
mean a death sentence, as in
the George Floyd case; nor
should a lack of proper train
ing, as in the recent case of the
Minnesota police officer who
meant to tase a suspect but shot
and killed him instead. Non-
compliance (or even delayed
compliance) should not have
led to an Army second lieuten
ant being pepper-sprayed and
arrested for simply driving
to a well-lit area to pull over.
In each of these cases, the
suspects were Black. To assert

that race had nothing to do with
the actions of the officers is to
ignore the canary.
I firmly believe (and have
said on many, many occasions)
that national standards of po
lice training and education will
go a long way toward minimiz
ing these types of often-tragic
incidents. As will weeding
out the bad apples. But this
requires a proactive leader
ship sorely lacking among
our elected representatives
and within the criminal justice
system itself. So long as there
are those who value power
over principal, control over
care, money over morality, and
divisiveness over decency, far
too many Americans will suf
fer in silence, wading through
waters of despair and currents
of contempt.
We need to pay more atten
tion to the canary.
Searles
was shown when one of the
disciples seeking to defend him
draws a sword and cuts off the
right ear of a servant of the high
priest. The response of Jesus
was not to congratulate and
praise his disciple but to say
“No more of this,” and touches
the injured man’s ear and heals
him. He also said, “Put your
sword back in its place for all
those who draw the sword will
die by the sword.” Christ, in
his own defense, rejected the

use of violent force. On the
cross, he forgave those who
tortured and crucified him.
Does anyone believe that Jesus
slept with a sword near his bed
in order to protect himself from
an intruder? While we glorify,
sing praises and pray to the
Prince of Peace, it seems many
Christians prefer the words
popularized by the National
Rifle Association: “Til give
you my gun when you pry it
from my cold, dead hands.”

really ponder.
How is it possible that I have
three adult children, all with
their own grownup lives and
careers?
How is it possible that I
have five grandchildren, the
oldest of whom will become a
teenager this year?
How could I possibly be well

detour. Even in a thorny mess
that requires a chainsaw.
Even though I realize I may
not be that tough person I like
to pretend I am at times, I am
okay with that. My little break
down showed me that I still
love big and forgive and I have
empathy, regardless if others
deserve the courtesy or not.

Where did all of this white
hair and these achy joints come
from?
And why, in the name of
all that's holy, would anybody
think that toilet paper should
roll off from the bottom.
Anyway, here's to that next
trip around the sun.
Happy Birthday to me.

Next time you find your
self detoured, whether you
have giant red flashing lights
saying “this way” or you’re
stuck in the middle of nowhere
surrounded by road kill and
vultures, try to be thankful for
the hiccup. Just imagine all the
roads that detours save us from.
