The Burke County High School girls tennis team is the 2021 region runner-up.
Tennis season ends for Bears

Burke County’s girls brought
home the region runner-up
trophy in tennis last week, and
the boys finished out the season
with a strong effort.
Last Wednesday, both teams
competed in the region tourney
at Newman Tennis Center in
Augusta, with the girls entering
as second seed and the boys as
the third. In the first round, the
girls earned a bye, and the boys
went up against Thomson, eas
ily winning 3-0.
The second round put the
girls against Harlem and the
boys faced ARC, two teams
that head coach Laurie Dickey
says were tough matches dur
ing the regular season.
“We went in better prepared
knowing how our opponents
played,” she said, adding that
the second doubles team of
Elsa Withers and Madison
Martin as well as Doris Cross
at number one singles made
pretty quick work of Harlem.
The second (Kyleigh Egan)
and third (Josalyn Roberts)
singles girls both had close
matches, going to a tiebreaker
in both of their first sets. Rob
erts won her first set, but Egan
got into a battle, losing the first
set in a tiebreaker but coming
back to win the second set and
then the third, to secure a 3-1
victory that put the girls in the
championship match against
Morgan County. The girls fell
to them 0-3 and finished as
region runner-up.
The boys fell to ARC 0-3 in
the second round, finishing the
region tourney in fourth. They
traveled to Brantley County
High School on April 16 for the
first leg of the state tournament.
“They knew going into it
that it would be tough since
they were facing the first seed,”
Dickey said. “The boys all had
a good mindset though and
tried their best. I felt that the
singles players, Ryan Morris,
Bailey Lord and Jacob Curtis,
all hung in there pretty well.
They were able to stay in the
rallies and tried to work on
placement strategies we have
been doing at practice. The
boys doubles teams put up a
fight as well. Sam Eckerman
and Jacob Boothe at second
doubles were able to mix it up
a bit for their opponent. Preston
Adkins, who plays first doubles
with Ethan Coalson, was our
lone senior boy and this was
his last high school tennis
match. He never let up on the
net, which is the strongest part
of his game. Even though they
made a good showing, the
team unfortunately fell 0-3 to
Brantley.”
On Monday, the girls hosted
Brantley County for the first
round of state, falling 0-4.
“The singles players were
hanging in there and Egan was
making a comeback, but it just
wasn't enough to pull the team
through,” Dickey said. “I am so
proud of how they all played.
I hate that we are losing four
starting seniors from the girls
team and one from the boys.
They all play with so much
heart and want to do well. We
will get prepared for next sea
son though. It will be a rebuild
ing year for the girls since we
are losing so many starters. The
boys have a depth of talented
players so I am excited to see
the work they put in during
the off season and who might
break away from the pack as
a real standout. There is a lot
of potential, and we will see
how it goes. I am happy that
we could still make a showing
at state. That is very important
to us and our tennis program
as we continue to try to grow
the sport.”
Bears fall 1-3 in series
against Morgan County

The Bears (15-8, 10-4) lost
two in a three-game series
against Morgan County last
week.
The series started off prom
ising for Burke County as
they defeated Morgan 5-2 on
Tuesday, racking up 12 hits in
the victory. Jahkari Howard
knocked a home run in the
sixth inning. He also had a
single, an RBI, 2 runs and 2
walks. Other leading hitters
were Evan Richardson, who
had a double, single, 2 runs and
a walk; and Jed
Osborn, triple, 2
RBIs and a run.
Marshall
Flowers pitched
all seven innings
with 4 hits, 2
walks, a strike
out, 2 runs and
1 earned run.
When the Bears faced Mor
gan again on Friday in a dou
bleheader, they were dealt two
losses at the hands of another
highly ranked baseball team,
falling in game one 6-0 and in
game two, 13-3.
In the first game, Burke
County managed just one hit
when Howard singled in the
fifth. He also picked up a sto
len base.
On the mound, Myles Heat-
wole pitched five innings and
recorded 7 hits, 3 walks, 5
strikeouts,4 runs and 2 earned
runs. Hunter Carroll allowed
2 hits, 2 runs and a walk and
struck out 2 batters over two
innings.
Morgan got an early lead in
game two, and the Bears never
recovered. Morgan County
racked up 13 hits to the Bears'
8.
Richardson led the offense,
recording a double, 2 singles,
an RBI, a run and a stolen base.
Flowers produced 2 singles,
while Osborn had a single, and
RBI and a walk.
Flowers, Howard and Carroll
took turns on the mound for
around two innings each, with
Flowers recording 4 hits, 4
walks, 4 strikeouts, 7 runs and
2 earned runs; Howard, 6 hits,
2 walks, 5 strikeouts, 5 runs
and 4 earned runs; and Carroll,
3 hits and a run.
"We played the number six
team in the state in 3A Har
lem, taking them to extra in
nings twice and winning one
game in that series and now
have just finished playing the
number eight team in the state
in 3A, taking
one from them
on the road then
not playing well
at home to lose
the series,"head
coach Billy
Marchman said.
"We all are sol
id high school
baseball teams from the same
region. We had one of our top
players that also is one of our
better pitchers out the entire
series due to Covid and were
down our starting third base-
man, who is our clean up batter,
to a fractured wrist. We did not
have school on Friday and we
had prom activities scheduled
for Saturday. As a veteran
coach I am disappointed that
we allowed distractions and
injuries from not making us
focus harder on executing the
proper fundamentals along
with a tougher mentality in
such a big series after taking
game one on the road."
The Bears played ARC at
home yesterday (Tuesday),
but results were not available
at press time. They play three
other region games this week:
Cross Creek today (Wednes
day) at 5:30 and ARC again in
a double-header on Friday at 5.
All games are away.
