STAR
and authentic musicians and utilizing my passion, education and
career training to advocate for females in music.
My STAR teacher’s best attribute: Sincerity! Mrs. Dozier is
always honest, and she gives the best advice. Since I first entered
her classroom in sixth grade, she has been a trustworthy mentor
I could reach out to for guidance or a listening ear, no matter
the topic. She is encouraging but also realistic, so she inspires
students to reach their goals while simultaneously preparing
them for challenges.
Why her teaching and my learning styles click: Mrs. Dozier
has always been really personable, making an intentional effort
to connect with students and show she cares for us. Regardless
of what she was teaching, she always found a way to relate it
back to her personal experiences or those of her students so we
could develop a better understanding of and appreciation for the
lessons we were learning.
What my STAR teacher has taught me about life: Mrs.
Dozier has taught me to think ahead and work hard. Throughout
high school, as I narrowed my sights on potential colleges and
eventually committed to my dream school, she has reminded
me to consider my options holistically, talked with me about the
scholarship application process and motivated me to achieve
my aspirations. She has taught me how important it is to have
long-term goals and put forth my best effort to make them come
to fruition.
Personal experience that has most influenced my life: My
mom used to always play music in our home when I was little, and
I vividly remember sitting on our kitchen counter one evening,
belting out Taylor Swift, Hannah Montana and Conway Twitty
songs on a loop. I did not realize then how much of an impact
that would have on me, but I truly believe that experience led
to my immense love of music, my specific tastes and favorite
genres and my decision to pursue a career in the music business.
Favorite quote: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in
every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present
your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
In my spare time: I am definitely listening to music and most
likely telling everyone I know about my latest mild obsession with
a song, album or artist. You may also find me watching “Sweet
Home Alabama” or “Armageddon” for the millionth time and
randomly reciting quotes from each, just for fun.
Favorite historical figure: My favorite historical figure is
Susan B. Anthony because she was an advocate for gender
equality and women’s rights. These are subjects I am incredibly
passionate about and have researched at great lengths. I have
also completed several school projects about gender inequality,
specifically in the music industry. I hope to make impacts in my
career and personal life that eliminate gender disparities, elevate
women’s voices and secure equal opportunities for all.
STAR teacher name: Tracy Dozier
Hometown: Merritt Island, Fla.
What is the best thing about being a teacher? The best thing
about being a teacher is building relationships with my students.
I want to go beyond just teaching them content; I want them to
know they can trust me and come to me with not only questions
about schoolwork but anything that might come their way.
What is your favorite lesson to teach? My favorite lesson
to teach for U.S. History is when we discuss the Plains Indians.
We do what's called a DBQ and we really study how the Native
Americans were affected by Westward Expansion.
Interests: My family likes to go camping; we love the beach;
and we love going to Disney World.
STAR student’s best attribute? She is genuine. She is real.
She has such a sweet personality and she really cares for other
people and wants the world to be a better place.
Why do your teaching and learning styles click? I think we re
both funny! We just did well together. I'm very easygoing, and
she is, too. I think we both try to think outside the box to find
answers and/or solutions.
What has your STAR student taught you? Brooke has taught
me to really think about how things affect other people. She is
very selfless and is always concerned with how other people feel
about topics or issues and that is a great characteristic to have.
She makes me feel good when I am around her because she is
so happy and she sees the best in people.
and able to approach and befriend anyone.
Why her teaching and my learning styles click: Her teaching
style presents the lesson like a story; it is easy and interesting to
follow. She also tailors her lessons as much as possible to the
needs of her students.
What my STAR teacher has taught me about life: I have
learned the importance of seeing things from different view
points and understanding different perspectives, even if you don’t
necessarily agree with them.
Personal experience that has most influenced my life: All
of the summers I spent at Duke TIP’s summer program from
2016-2019 are some of the most memorable in my life. I met
many different people, learned and experienced new and diverse
subjects and made some of my best friendships there.
Favorite quote: “Sometimes doing your best is not good
enough. Sometimes you must do what is required.” - Winston
Churchill
In my spare time: Besides a good deal of video games, TV
and reading, I also keep aquarium fish as a hobby. It started when
I was little and saw the fish kept in my grandmother’s restaurant.
I have always had a fascination with them since and got my
first chance to start raising some a few years ago. It has been an
enjoyable and rewarding hobby.
Favorite historical figure: President Teddy Roosevelt, both a
charismatic man and politician for the American people
STAR teacher name: Karen Reeves

What is the best thing about being a teacher? Teaching is
a joyful mission for me. Not a day passes without purpose or
without the opportunity to share with students how meaningful
learning really is. And not a day has passed for me in almost 40
years without some child blessing me in some way.
What is your favorite lesson to teach? This is impossible for
me to answer. Because every day a student is in any classroom
is an important day, I try to make the current lesson my favorite.
I enjoy teaching the term paper because it suits my analytical
nature, but I especially love teaching any of my history classes
because they are so diverse in their content and are a reflection
of the nature of man with so many “life lessons.”
Interests: Reading, studying, gardening, baking
STAR student’s best attribute? Integrity. While it is true that
Brandon is intellectually talented and generous with others, his
honesty and unwavering devotion to “doing what is right” are
the context within which all his other qualities reside. I believe
he realizes that without integrity, nothing else matters.
Why do your teaching and learning styles click? Brandon
and I are both analytical and focused in our approach to learning,
but I think the source of our compatibility is a shared love of
reading. It has been my observation that students who are avid
readers are more likely to learn for the sheer pleasure of discovery
than those who are not, and while this isn’t always true, I feel we
two do share a delight in learning that begins with an appreciation
of the written word.
What has your STAR student taught you? Mindfulness.
The art of pausing to appreciate every moment and live one’s
life deliberately often eludes me. But as I watch Brandon in a
variety of situations, I realize he has mastered this to a far greater
degree than I. So while I have yet to become proficient at this,
his calm demeanor and purposeful approach to life certainly set
an example that I admire.
FAITH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
STAR student name: Cobb Hollingsworth
Hometown: Hephzibah
Parents: David and Tammy Hollingsworth
College plans: Plan to attend Emmaus Bible College
in Dubuque, Iowa. Hope to earn my degree in business
administration with a minor in certified financial planning.
Where I see myself in five years: Hope to have graduated
college and started my career as a financial planner.
In ten years: Ten years from now I hope to be successful in
my desired held of financial planning and be financially stable.
My STAR teacher’s best attribute: Mrs. Almy’s best attribute
is her passion for teaching. She cares deeply for her students and
goes to great lengths to help them succeed. For example, she
Continued from front
constantly checked in with our physics class during the covid
shutdown and set up multiple video conferences to ensure that
we understood the material.
Why her teaching and my learning styles click: Mrs. Almy
gives detailed explanations for the material, making it easy to
understand. I have always appreciated that she has never just
stood at the front of the class and just lectured or read straight
from the book. She takes the material, and makes it easy to apply
and put into practice. On top of all of this, we both possess a
sarcastic wit which has provided some of my best memories in
highschool.
What my STAR teacher has taught me about life: Taking
classes with Mrs. Almy has taught me that hard work really
does pay off. Her classes have been some of the most difficult
throughout my highschool career, but I have succeeded because
she pushed me to do my best all the time. I know that nothing in
life is given for free, but I also know that with hard work, you
can achieve your goals and dreams.
Subject that has most influenced my life: History is my
favorite subject. I have always been fascinated by learning about
the past and using what I have learned to better myself and those
around me.
Favorite quote: I’m not completely sure on this one, but
“You’re killin’ me smalls!” from the Sandlot has to be one of
my favorites.
In my spare time: I enjoy spending time with friends and
family and travelling to new places. I also enjoy reading (mostly
historical books) and playing my two favorite sports of basketball
and tennis.
Favorite historical figure: My favorite historical figure is
Robert E. Lee. While he is seen as “controversial” in today’s
world, it is impossible to deny the virtue of this great American
hero. He was the epitome of the Southern gentleman and a strong
Christian who used his faith in Christ as his guiding light. He
was a faithful husband, adored by his children and loyal to his
home state of Virginia. He fought for four years against an army
that was better equipped and had more manpower, yet he never
gave up until it was humanly impossible to proceed. And after
he lost the Civil War, he encouraged reconciliation and spoke out
against bitterness to help ease the burden of reunification. Say
what you will, but I cannot think of a better person to imitate
from a human standpoint.

FLUSHING NOTICE
As part of its corrosion control program, the City of
Waynesboro will begin flushing water lines in the
distribution system on April 27th, 28th and 29th.
All customers on the City water system should
be aware that their water could be “discolored” or
cloudy for a time during the flushing process. We
advise customers to check their water on each day
during this process before doing laundry.
Customers experiencing “discolored” water should
open the cold water tap in their bathtub and let the
water run until it clears.
Flushing is done to clean deposits and sediment
from the pipes. These deposits can result in an odor
and turbidity in the water. If you have any questions,
please contact City Hall at 706-554-8000.
