LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Editor:
On Tuesday, April 13,2021,
the Burke County Commission
Meeting was held at the old
Burke County, Courthouse.
On the agenda was item #4
(Update on Election Integrity
Act of 2021) also known as
S.B. 202 (Voter Suppression
Bill). After all of the discus
sion, a vote was taken, the
snowball rolled, and District
4 Commissioner Tommy Nix
raised his hand voting in favor
of Burke County Attorney
Barry Fleming keeping his
job. The same attorney that
helped get S.B. 202 (Voter
Suppression Bill) into law. At
that meeting, Commissioner
Nix voted; however, it was not
a vote to STAND UP for the
voters in his district. Those
of us who lived through or re
member hearing stories about
the struggles of voter suppres
sion know how difficult those
times were.
Commissioner Nix voted
AGAINST the people in his
District, many of who voted for
him. His support for keeping
someone that HELPED make
and pass this Voter Suppression
Law is not the RIGHT thing to
do. Commissioner Nix showed
that he favored sticking with
his “Party” in voting to keep
Barry Fleming in his position
as Burke County’s Attorney.
So I’m asking EVERYONE
when the time comes to register
and VOTE to remember the
action taken by Commissioner
Nix. There is always a chal
lenge to voting but even with
ALL the speed bumps “Slow
Down but Don’t turn Around.”
We are used to obstacles but we
love America and the promise
of liberty for all. We can never
give up hope and must meet
every challenge placed before
us. We know it has been God’s
Grace and Mercy that has car
ried us through all these years,
He did NOT forsake in the past
and will not forsake us today.
We must keep our faith and
work to do What’s Right! We
all have a voice and a vote and
we must use them both. Let
us not be deterred and not let
adversity turn us around. Our
Vote is OUR CHOICE. Please
make the Right One.
Thank You,
Ruby L. Carter, Sally
