Phillip Hodges took the win for the Bears in game one against ARC
Bears record 4-0 week

The Bears recorded four
wins on the diamond last week
as they wrapped up their regu
lar season of baseball.
On Tuesday, April 20, they
defeated the Academy of Rich
mond County 11-1 with Tripp
Cibak leading the offense. He
hit a 3-run homer, a double,
scored 2 runs and had 5 RBIs.
Other top hitters were Jahkari
Howard, a double, an RBI, 3
runs scored, a walk, 2 stolen
bases; and Evan Richardson, a
single, an RBI, one run scored,
a walk and a stolen base.
Phillip Hodges earned the
win, pitching 4.2 innings with
6 strikeouts, 2 walks and just
1 hit.
Seniors Richardson, Cibak,
Jed Osborn, Chris Buxton and
Daniel Brown took the home
held for the last time of the
regular season along with their
parents.
On Wednesday, April 21, the
Bears busted Cross Creek 16-6.
Top hitters were Howard,
with a double, 2 singles, 2
RBIs, 2 runs scored, a walk and
a stolen base; Dylan Dixon, a
single, RBI, 3 runs scored, a
walk and a stolen base; and
Brown, a double, 2 singles and
2 RBIs.
“Our bats were on fire, and
we picked up another region
win to make us 10-4 and 17-8,”
said head coach Billy March-
man. “We finished strong and
got a lot of guys into the game
as well as pitched some new
faces.”
On Friday, April 23, the
Bears managed to take out
ARC in both games of a dou
bleheader, defeating the Razor-
backs 15-4 and 14-4.
In game one, leading hit
ters were Brown, 2 doubles,
2 singles, 3 RBIs and 2 runs
scored; Richardson, a double, 2
singles, 5 RBIs, 4 runs scored,
a walk and 2 stolen bases; and
Marshall Flowers, 2 singles, 2
RBIs, 2 runs scored, 2 walks
and stolen base.
Phillip Hodges pitched 4
innings to gain the win and
allowed 4 hits, a walk, 5 strike
outs, 3 runs and 1 earned run.
Game two’s top hitters were
Howard, a triple, single, 3 runs
scored, 2 walks and a stolen
base; Osborn, 2 doubles, an
RBI and 2 walks; and Flowers,
a double, a single and 4 RBIs.
“I am very proud of my team
as they have had to overcome
a lot of adversity with me
this season,” Marchman said.
“This group of guys is a true
testament of brotherhood. We
have dealt with the Covid-19
pandemic, death of a fam
ily member and three starters
with bad injuries. This team
has placed a band-aid on our
problems and continues to find
ways to improve while win
ning a bunch of games. Wish
us luck as we strive to survive
and advance.”
The Bears finish the regu
lar season 19-8, 14-4. They
travel to Appling County High
School in Baxley this Thursday
for the first round of the state
playoffs, with game one at 4
p.m. and game two following
30 minutes after the conclusion
of the first game. The “if game”
will be Friday at 5 p.m.

Waters awarded Hatcher Award

Eason Waters, a senior at
Edmund Burke Academy, was
recently presented with the
Hatcher Award for his achieve
ments in high school football.
The award, presented by Ro-
tarian Clifford Fewis, is given
annually to just one football
player in Burke County who
exemplifies the qualities of
leadership and teamwork, both
on and off the held. The Hatch
er Award honors the memory
of Cliff Hatcher, who played
football for the University of
Georgia from 1908-1910 and
went on to serve the United
States, reaching the rank of
general. He then went on to
become a prominent lawyer in
Waynesboro.
Clifford Fewis’ brother,
Carlton Fewis, was the first
recipient of the award in 1978.
From that year forward, those
receiving the honor from the
Waynesboro Rotary Club were

Edmund Burke Academy’s track team had a strong showing at the region track meet last week with several athletes advancing to
the state meet. Qualifiers for the girls included Morgan Clark, first place in 400-meter and fourth in discus; Kensy Felix, first place
in 800-m, third in 1600-m and third in 3200-m; Braelyn Reeves, first in high jump; Payton Palmer, third in 400-m; and girls 4x400
relay, first. Boys qualifying were Carson Woods, second in 200-m and fourth in 100-m; Evan Hirschauer, second in triple jump;
Eason Waters, third in 400-m; Brantley Jones, fourth in pole vault; and the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams both placed second.
