The Burke County Bears
were eliminated from the state
tournament following a two-
game loss to Appling County in
the first round of competition.
Things started out rough for
the Bears in game one when
Appling took the lead on an
error in the first inning. From
there, Burke County struggled
for hits while Appling batters
nailed 2 homers in the fourth.
Ultimately, the Bears fell 13-0.
Both Chris Buxton and Dan
iel Brown managed a hit apiece
against Appling’s pitcher, who
threw for 5 innings and struck
out 7 batters and walked one.
Phillip Flodges took the loss
for Burke County; he pitched
one and two-third innings, al
lowing 4 hits and 5 runs. Fie
also recorded one strike out
and a walk.
“We pulled our starter Phillip
Flodges, who threw well, early,
but we did not play good de
fense behind him,” head coach
Billy Marchman said. “The
move was made due to pitch
count for possible use in game
two or game three, after trail
ing by five early in the game.
The Appling starter pitcher is a
college commit and threw the
ball well, sitting 89-91 with his
fast ball.”
“We competed much better
in game two,” Marchman went
on. “We outhit them seven to
six, and we both committed an
error each. Our error was costly
on a dropped fly ball in right
held that led to two unearned
runs.”
Though the Bears came back
from a 5-run deficit to tie the
game up at 5 going into the top
of the seventh, Marchman said
the held umpire called a balk
on their pitcher with a runner at
third base, which put Appling
on top again, 6-5. “We got
a runner to second base with
one out in the bottom of the
seventh inning and advanced
him to third base with two
outs, but we were unable to
score him to push the game into
extra innings. Appling had two
pitchers that are both college
commits, and they did what
was necessary to win ... the ball
did not bounce our way, and we
never could steal momentum.”
Brown and Marshall Flowers
led the offensive effort, each
with 2 singles and Flowers
scoring a run. Jed Osborn,
Chavous Johnson and Myles
Heatwole each hit a single.
Osborn scored a run; Johnson
earned an RBI; and Heatwole
had a stolen base.
On the mound, Flowers had
5 hits, 5 walks, 3 strikeouts, 5
runs and 4 earned runs over 4
innings, and Heatwole had a
hit, a strikeout, 3 walks and a
run over 3 innings.
“Our entire region faced
tough competition with Thom
son and Morgan County los
ing their series while Harlem
squeaked by the fourth seed to
advance to round two,” March-
man said. “South Georgia
provided competitive base
ball, and we have to get back
to work this summer and off
season to be right back on the
stage to compete and hope
fully have a better result in the
upcoming season. I want to
thank my assistant coaches for
all their hard work, the players
for their dedication to our pro
gram, the parents for their sup
port and our school system for
providing us with everything
we needed to be a successful
team this season. I wish our
five seniors the best as they
graduate and move forward in
their next chapter of life.”
The Bears finish the 2021
season with a 19-10 overall
record and a region record of
14-4.
