to pay for these programs. He has proposed higher taxes on
corporations—many of whom pay NO federal taxes at all—and
the wealthiest households. The hue-and-cry from many Repub
licans is that higher taxes are bad. Many Republicans signed
a no-new-taxes pledge prior to throwing their hats in the ring.
So, it does not matter if the new taxes are aimed at free-loading
corporations or folks who earn in excess of $400,000, the answer
must be the same—NO NEW TAXES. There also is an effort
to suggest that new taxes will fall on the middle and working
classes. We were Americans before identifying as Democrats
or Republicans. We need to embrace and support those things
that benefit us all whether they come from personal, community,
religious or governmental sources. It is still true: United we
stand; Divided we fall.
