Burke County will receive
approximately $4.3 million in
funds through The American
Rescue Plan Act of 2021,
signed into law by President
Joe Biden March 11.
Statutory language autho
rizes the use of the funds to in
clude assistance to households,
small businesses and nonprofit
organizations, pay to eligible
workers, provision of govern
ment services, water, sewer
and broadband infrastructure
and/or certain organizations
involved in transportation.
The Board of Commission
ers and County Manager Merv
Waldrop agreed May 1 that
utilizing part of the funds for
broadband is a logical choice.
“I believe we need to invest in
broadband,” Chairwoman Terri
Kelly said. “But I also believe
that we need to help the people
who need help.”
The county has received
several requests from local
nonprofits seeking financial
assistance. Boggs Academy
also made a general request.
Coroner Mary Bennett asked
for assistance in feeding the
homeless. Waldrop said he
has asked that organizations
submit requests that include
specifically what the funds
will be used for. “We can put
it on the agenda once we have
more information on what their
need is,” he said of donating
to assist in feeding Burke
County’s homeless population.
“A thousand or two thousand
will probably go a long way
to help their program and you
won’t notice it out of the $4.3
million that we are getting.”
The board also discussed the
prospect of contributing money
to Wimberly House Ministries.
