Board fills Hospital Authority vacancy WHAT’S NEXT?
SHELLIE SMITLEY
thetruecitizen.shellie@gmail.com
The Commissioners unani
mously approved the appoint
ment of Jessica Lynn Osborne
to the Burke County Hospital
Authority May 11.
“They were looking for
some diverse opinions of
thought,” Osborne said and
mentioned that Commissioner
Tommy Nix knew she was
looking to get more connected
to the community. She was
approached with filling Johnny
Christian’s seat who resigned
effective February 9,2021.
Osborne is a chemistry man
ager at Plant Vogtle Units 1 &
2. She resides in Waynesboro
with her husband Alexander
and their two children. She
graduated from Hephzibah
High School. She holds a de
gree in biology.
“When I was going through
my college courses, I was
originally pursuing the medical
held,” she said. “So it is one of
the loves that I have.”
Osborne said she hopes to
bring an unbiased perspective
to the Hospital Authority. She
is enthusiastic about the recent
Burke Medical Center lease
venture and discussions about
the expansion of services.
She envisions the partnership
stimulating the local economy.
“I am excited to get started,”
Osborne said of her new posi
tion.
The Medical Center is still
waiting for the Georgia Attor
ney General’s office to issue
a report indicating whether it
approves of Burke Hospital
Company leasing the facility.

Camp Soar helps children process grief
SHELLIE SMITLEY
thetruecitizen.shellie@gmail.com
St. Michael’s Episcopal
Church is hosting a grief camp
for children ages 6 to 16 years
old.
Rev. Larry Jesion said the
idea for Camp Soar stemmed
from an out-of-town client’s
family member looking for
resources to assist children in
coping with COVID-19 related
deaths.
“As I referred her to
resources, it occurred to me
that we really need that in
Burke County,” Jesion said.
“Surely children have been
affected in our community.”
The camp is open for
children who have lost a loved
one or friend, regardless of
cause of death.
Jesion recognizes that
often children do not get
the opportunity to receive
counseling or instruction on
how to process grief. Many
times they are not told how to
cope with death. In response,
St. Michael’s is offering the
camp this summer. The 2-day
session runs from noon to 5
p.m. June 18 and from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. June 19.
Children grieve differently
than adults, sometimes
putting it on the back burner
and dealing with unresolved
feelings later in life. The death
of a parent might evoke fear of
the other parent dying. Older
children may have to assume
more responsibility. Death
can mean more than the loss
of a loved one; it can bring a
loss of innocence or a loss of
childhood, Jesion said.
The camp will offer children
the opportunity to explore ways
to express themselves through
storytelling, art and music.
Lunch will be served the first
day. The second day includes
breakfast and lunch. Snacks are
included and each participant
will receive a t-shirt.
“The camp is set up like any
other camp with arts and crafts
and activities,” Jesion said.
“The difference is the activities
are geared toward encouraging
children to share their stories
and to hear from other children
and give them coping skills to
return home with.”
The camp is open to children
of any denomination and will
focus on grief processing.
“We are not here to treat
doctrine or theology,” Jesion
said of the camp. “We are
partnering with Pruitt Health
Hospice out of Augusta. We
will have RNs, bereavement
staff and coordinators and
social workers on hand for the
event.”
There is no fee for the camp
and transportation can be
Rev. Larry Jesion
provided. Registration closes
June 4.
Applications and more
information, including
volunteer opportunities, can
be obtained by calling 706-
554-3465 or by emailing camp.

Discrepancy exists between
local and state vaccination rates
SHELLIE SMITLEY
thetruecitizen.shellie@gmail.com
The Burke County Health
Department reports decreased
COVID-19 cases as vaccina
tion efforts increase.
The Georgia Department of
Public Health reported 19 con
firmed local cases from May
1-11, after averaging just 20
cases per week for the months
of March and April, according
to a May 11 email addressed to
Burke County Manager Merv
Waldrop
A majority of ongoing cases
are being seen in younger
age groups, young adults and
primarily unvaccinated popula
tions, County Nurse Manager
Gina Richardson said in the
email.
Collectively, pharmacies,
Burke Medical Center, local
nursing homes and physicians
have vaccinated almost half of
the Burke County population,
according to Richardson.
“Our clinic has administered
almost 6,000 doses,” she said
in the email. “We still have
3,000 doses on hand. We are
also working with Plant Vogtle
to assure that they have vac
cine available and have offered
multiple clinics for them at our
office.”
However, according to the
Georgia's Vaccine Distribution
Dashboard the numbers are
much lower, indicating that as
of May 12 only 21% of Burke
County residents are fully
vaccinated. It said 26% of the
residents had received at least
one dose.
On May 12, Richardson
declined to comment for this
article.
The health department is
holding vaccination clinics at
its office Tuesdays through
Thursdays, utilizing both the
Moderna and Johnson & John
son vaccines. A weekend vac
cination site is scheduled for
Saturday, June 19.
The department has also
designated May 20 as Johnson
& Johnson vaccination day in
spite of reported contractor
problems and amid contro
versy.
Emergent BioSolutions “ac
knowledged contaminating
millions of doses after mix
ing up ingredients from J&J
and AstraZeneca’s vaccines.
An FDA inspection report
also revealed serious lapses in
safety and hygiene last month
at the company’s Baltimore
plant, and the agency has since
ordered the company to pause
production of the shots,” ac
cording to a May 11 article in
Politico.
J&J has been importing
doses from a Netherlands facil
ity amid the Emergent delays,”
the article states.
The US Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention re
ported May 12 that 28 people
developed a rare blood clotting
syndrome out of 8.7 million
given J&J's Janssen Corona-
virus vaccine. Three of them
have died from the condition,
known as thrombosis with
thrombocytopenia syndrome
(TTS).
The chances that a person
vaccinated with the J&J vac
cine will develop TTS are less
than one in 300,000, according
to CDC data.
Additionally, the local health
department is working with
the Burke County Sheriff’s
Department to get inmates
vaccinated.
Georgia eligibility includes
children ages 12-17. The local
Walgreens and CVS pharma
cies provide the Pfizer vaccine
to that age group. Pfizer con
tinues to be the only vaccine
approved for use in children.
East Central’s mass vac
cination site located at Craig
Houghton Elementary School
is closing soon. Pfizer will
be provided at the RCHD-
Windsor Spring Road location
beginning May 29. It is the
only DPH clinic in the district
administering Pfizer to people
age 12 and up, Richardson said.
A positive COVID-19 ex
posure May 12 prompted the
temporary closure of the Burke
County Probate Court offices
for cleaning and sanitizing.
