Deputies seize more than 100 marijuana
plants, firearms in Girard drug bust

More than 100 marijuana
plants and several firearms
were seized by Burke County
deputies and members of the
Georgia Governor’s Drug Task
Force on Thankful Church
Road in Girard.
During the search on Thurs
day, May 13, investigators un
covered 112 marijuana plants
and arrested 63-year-old prop
erty owner Willie Edward
Turner.
According to a report, the
Burke County Sheriff’s Of
fice was notified at 11:52 a.m.
by Georgia State Patrol that
their aviation unit noticed a
marijuana grow at the end of
Thankful Church Road. Mem
bers of the narcotics, investi
gation and crime suppression
units responded to the area at
approximately 1:30 to assist in
the search.
Turner told officers the plants
found around his residence and
on the property all belonged to
him and signed a consent form
allowing
officers to search his home.
During the search, deputies
found a shotgun with three
shells behind a door and a re
volver loaded with four rounds
on the dresser in one room and
firearm loaded with five rounds
in another room. A clear baggy
with 3.3 grams of marijuana
was also found on the dresser.
Turner was charged for man
ufacturing marijuana.

Burke Grand Jury
returns true bills
The April 2021 term Grand Jury returned the following
True Bills of indictment during the May 14,2021 session.
Jordan Tyrque Moore: Burglary in the first degree.
Timothy Albert Williams: Burglary in the first degree.
Keyonce Zakhia Walker: Criminal damage to property
in the first degree; terroristic threats.
Richard Frank Gaiser: Possession of cocaine; driving
under the influence (less safe) (alcohol); public indecency;
possession of drug related objects.
Paul Lee Adams: theft by taking.
Laquandra Bryawn Lemon: terroristic threats.
Lauren Olivia Brown: Serious injury by vehicle; driving

Man shot in
Waynesboro

A Gibson man was shot
in the chest early Saturday
morning.
According to a report from
the Waynesboro Police Depart
ment, officers responded to
Burke Medical Center just after
3:30 a.m. on May 15 in refer
ence to a large crowd gathered
for a gunshot victim. While the
report states no large crowd
was observed, the 22-year-old
victim was inside receiving
treatment from hospital staff.
He had apparently been shot
in the upper left chest by a
possible 9 mm and was alert
and talking.
Officers spoke to the victim’s
brother who stated the victim
had been taken to a home on
Dowell Avenue by their cousin
who should have known better
as the homeowner’s family and
victim’s family “are beefing
with each other.” He also said
the man who shot his brother is
known by the street name Tank.
The reporting officer located
both a handgun and blood on
the ground at the scene of the
crime.
Tank has been identified as
Mack Cooper, 26, who has
outstanding warrants with the
police department.
The victim was also wearing
an ankle monitor.
No explosive found at
BCHS after bomb threat

A bomb threat at Burke
County High School last Tues
day turned out to be a dud.
The Burke County Sheriff’s
Office responded to the school
with bomb-sniffing dogs and
found no trace of any explo
sive.
All students, faculty and staff
were evacuated after the threat
was received at 1:57 p.m..
Board of Education spokes
person Amy Nunnally said
this week, “we were given
the ‘all clear’ one hour and 37
minutes after the initial threat
was received.
We want to thank BCHS
secretary, Sharon Williams,
for following our emergency
procedures from the moment
the call was received. We also
want to thank the Burke Coun
ty Sheriff’s Office, BCEMA,
Campus Security, and Regional
Bomb Squad for their quick &
professional response.
