Waynesboro water treatment facility
While it may look like there’s not a lot going on at the spec building, The Development Authority
says there has been a lot going on behind the scenes.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce
Gina M. Raimondo announced
last week that the Department’s
Economic Development Ad
ministration (EDA) is award
ing a $1.5 million grant to the
city of Waynesboro to establish
a water well and water treat
ment facility needed to accom
modate local business needs.
This EDA project, to be
matched with $1.5 million
in local funds, is expected to
create nearly 200 jobs and
generate $60 million in private
investment. The match will
be funded through SPLOST
revenue, according to City
Manager Valerie Kirkland.
As part of the application
process, the Development Au
thority requested the funding
be directed to the city, which
supports both community and
industrial utility needs.
The funds will support in
frastructure improvements that
are vital for the city to have
reliable water sources.
“We fought hard for this
money- everyone on the team
working almost around-the-
clock, many late nights and
weekends to make this hap
pen,” Executive Director
Molly Olson said.
“This has been in the works
for over a year.”
The project was made pos
sible by the regional planning
efforts led by the Central Sa
vannah River Area Regional
Commission, which EDA
funds to bring together the
public and private sectors to
create an economic develop
ment roadmap to strengthen
the regional economy, support
private capital investment and
create jobs, the press release
said.
The EDA investment will
support a new dairy process
ing and packaging plant in the
Waynesboro-Burke County
Industrial Park and future busi
ness needs to create economic
opportunity and jobs for local
citizens.
“This funding is a fantastic
win for our community,” Ol
son said.

The United States District Court for the Eastern District of
Virginia (the “Court”) has approved a class and has preliminarily
approved a settlement with Golden Peanut Company, LLC in a
class action lawsuit captioned In Re Peanut Farmers Antitrust

depressed prices to farmers in the United States for Runner
Peanuts between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2019, in
violation of federal antitrust laws. Plaintiffs further allege that
because of the conspiracy, they and other farmers were injured
because they were paid less for their Runner Peanuts than they
would have been paid in the absence of the illegal conduct. The
Defendants have denied and continue to deny Plaintiffs’ claims.
On April 5, 2021, the Court approved settlements with
Defendants Olam and Birdsong totaling $57,750,000. More
recently, the Court preliminarily approved a $45,000,000
settlement with Golden Peanut (“Settlement”). Collectively,
