Governor suspends
Waynesboro mayor
SHELLIE SMITLEY • thetruecitizen.shellie@gmail.com
Gov. Brian Kemp suspended Waynesboro Mayor Gregory
Carswell Friday by way of executive order.
The order addresses Carswell's December 2020 indictment
on one count of identity fraud, one count of theft by taking,
one count of theft by deception and one count of forgery in the
second degree.
Carswell “is suspended from office immediately and without
further action pending the final disposition of the case or until
the expiration of his term of office, whichever occurs first” the
order states.
The mayor announced his leave of absence during a city council
meeting May 17, pointing to personal and legal issues.
“It is with deep regret and mixed emotions that I come to you
today that I’m going to take a leave of absence," he said during
the meeting. “In the best interest of the city and of the citizens
and for my family, I need to take a leave of absence to make sure
that I’m there for them.”
