All blood types needed;
donate at BCSO Thursday
DIANA ROYAL

Shepeard Community Blood
Center is in desperate need of
all blood types, and employees
are hoping Burke County will
help meet those needs in a
blood drive here on Thursday.
According to Jacqueline
Clemmons, senior recruitment
specialist for Shepeard, the
Burke County Sheriff’s Office
is hosting a drive June 10. The
blood mobile will be set up in
the BCSO parking lot at 225
Highway 24, Waynesboro,
from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“We are hoping for a good
turnout,” Clemmons said. “We
have been struggling to get
blood donations so our shelves
and supplies are low. We are in
need of every blood type so we
are asking everyone who can
to come out and donate before
they hit the road headed for a
relaxing weekend.”
Clemmons added there is
a misconception that those
who have had the COVID-19
vaccination are not able to
donate. “That is not true,” she
said. “Anyone who has had the
vaccine is eligible to donate,
and there is no deferral period.
They can have the vaccine and
donate in the same day.”
Donors wishing to speed up
the process may also complete
the QuickPass questionnaire
ahead of time by visiting She-
peard’s website at shepeard-
blood.org.
To donate blood, one must be
in good health, weigh at least
110 pounds and be at least 17
years old (or 16 with a signed
parent consent form). Anyone
donating should bring their
Shepeard Blood Donor Card
or a picture ID.
T-shirts will be provided to
donors while supplies last.

Clothing and non-perishable bagged food staples are gath
ered and shipped in barrels to Malawi twice a year. Traveling
by semi-truck and ship, it takes about three months for the
clothing to reach the country once it leaves the area.
children and men’s clothing to
the African country.
“We filled the barrels with
clothes, shoes, linen - you
name it,” Jackson said.
Now Jackson reaches out
on Facebook for clothing
donations.
“They can bring them to me
or I can come pick them up,”
she said. “We are working
on another shipment that is
scheduled to go out sometime
in July.”
People have responded well
to Jackson’s passion for helping
others in need. Donations fill
three rooms at two different
houses.
“It is just amazing,” Jackson
said. “I read a little bit of the
history of just how poor the
Malawi people are. Some
of them have never had
underclothes to wear and some
of them have never worn shoes.
It’s just a very poor country.
My heart goes out to them.”
Even clothes in less-than-
perfect condition are used by
the men to work in the fields,
Jackson said.
“It is in my heart to do things
for people, people who are
less fortunate,” Jackson said.
“I don’t get a lot of enjoyment
from spending a lot of money
on myself when there are
people who don’t have.”
Jackson hopes she will have
the opportunity to travel to
Africa in the future. In the
meantime, she is planning a
trip for Midville children to
Eudora Farms Animal Safari in
Salley, S.C. She wants to offer
the experience to kids who
might not otherwise venture
outside of Burke County.
“I was trying to think of
something that I could do with
the children on a small scale
that wouldn’t cost me a lot of
money and cost the parents
nothing,” Jackson said.
She contacted a bus driver
friend, Midville resident
Marilyn Moody, who agreed to
help. Summerstand Outreach
Church offered the use of their
15-passenger van at no charge.
Jackson drove around town,
knocking on doors, presenting
the idea to area parents.
“I drove around Midville,”
Jackson said laughing “I like
to buy gas and drive.”
The plan is to take the
children to the safari later this
month. The trip will include
lunch.
Jackson and Moody are
covering the cost of the event.
An anonymous donor has
agreed to pay for the meals. All
12 seats for the event are filled.
If Jackson has her way the
trip will benefit more than a
dozen children though. She has
contacted the Burke County
Board of Education in hopes of
borrowing a small school bus.
“If we can get that mini
school bus, then we could
probably take 20 children,” she
said enthusiastically.
Jackson is driven to use her
time making a difference in the
lives of youngsters. She pays
the utility bills on a Murphey
Street building donated to the
community through the BOE,
while she figures out how it can
benefit Midville children.
“It’s a 501 (c) 3 and I just
need someone to work with
me in that building so that
we can get something going
in Midville for the children,”
Jackson said. “Anything
educational, I wish I could
teach kids how to read.”
Jackson tutors her great-
granddaughter who lives
with her. The mother of three
biological and six adopted
children, grandmother of five
and great-grandmother of three
said she likes to make good use
of her time.
“I know I can’t save the
world,” Jackson said. “But I
try to make a difference where
I can.”
