Major Chester Huffman Jr.
is no longer employed by the
Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
Huffman began his law en
forcement career in 1975 with
the City of North Augusta,
South Carolina. In 1982, he
joined the Augusta Police
Department (APD) where he
attained the rank of Lieutenant
and Commander of the Special
Operations Bureau - Motor
cycle Squad, Mounted Patrol
Squad, Housing Authority
Squad, Marine Enforcement
Squad and SWAT. He also
spent time overseeing the Of
fice of Professional Standards
(Internal Affairs and Public
Information). In 1996, after
the abolishment of the APD,
he was promoted to the rank
of Captain with the Richmond
County Sheriff’s Office.
Huffman was third in com
mand with the Burke County
Sheriff’s Office, specializing
in the areas of Administration
and Detention. His primary
focus was budget, personnel,
policy and procedure, grants,
needs assessment and state
Major Chester Huffman Jr.
and national certification of the
detention center. He started out
as a consultant for professional
services from January 2017 to
September 2017. On October
1, 2017, he started working
fulltime for the department.
Huffman voluntarily re
signed his position with the
office Thursday, June 10, with
the intention of resuming re
tirement, Sheriff Alfonzo Wil
liams said.
“I was retired before Burke
County and I retired again,”
Huffman said in a phone call
June 14.
BURKE EMA REPORT
The Burke County Emergency Management Agency
responded to 115 patients’ calls during the week ending
June 13.
Of those, 78 resulted in transports, including 45 to Augusta
hospitals and one to another out-of-county hospital. Thirty
seven of the transports were determined to be emergencies
and 41 were non-emergent.
The agency also answered 20 fire calls during the week.
They included one brush/grass fire, five rescues, two vehicle
fires, one woods fire, two public service calls and nine un
specified calls.
Funding
Kemp, challenges the plan to
create a new judicial circuit
for Columbia County. It will be
heard by Fulton County Senior
Judge Gail S. Tusan since the
eight Superior Court judges of
the Augusta Judicial Circuit
recused themselves from pre
siding over the case.
The lawsuit seeks to invali
date Senate Bill 9 passed by the
General Assembly in January.
The suit contends that Re
publican Senator Lee Anderson
of Grovetown overstepped his
authority when he introduced
the bill which takes effect July
1. It alleges that the bill vio
lated the separation of powers
between the three branches of
government.
According to the suit, a
Continued from front
workload analysis, based on
pre-pandemic load, showed
Columbia County’s caseload
justifies three judges. Rich
mond and Burke counties have
a workload qualifying it for
six judgeships. The new law
provides for only five superior
court judgeships for Burke and
Richmond counties.
The suit also alleges the
law violates the Voting Rights
Act by creating a separate,
white-majority circuit, diluting
the votes of Black Columbia
County residents and voiding
the votes of residents in the
three counties who elected the
first Black district attorney of
the Augusta Judicial Circuit,
Jared Williams.
