“Golden Harvest came down
today to help us feed the dis
placed, the hungry and the
elderly,” Mary Bennett said.
The women of the Sisters
Offering Service organization
(SOS) made up of Bennett, Pat
Steele and Lea Gerlach, feed
approximately 70 people every
Monday and Wednesday and
“whenever they get food.” Area
churches and Wimberly House
Ministries assist with the cause,
but even if no one donates, the
women pay for the food out of
their own pockets.
“We had to call ourselves
something,” Bennett said.
“People are crying out for
help, S.O.S.”
Bennett said the women of
ten prepare meals themselves
or order from area restaurants
and then drive around deliver
ing meals.
A food drive, June 24, which
consisted of 200 meal boxes,
took place at Magnolia Acres,
in front of a house in which
Bennett resided as a child.
Mike Garrison, director of
Compass for Hope, called the
women June 23 informing
them there was food avail
able to distribute and asked
them how quickly they could
organize. The women are on
standby, willing to jump at any
chance to make a difference.
“Yesterday, I got a call, today
we are here,” Steele said.
SOS members are working
with the city’s Task Force to
put together a 501 (c) (3) non
profit that will operate out of a
donated building near the rail
road tracks. It will offer shelter
and food to Waynesboro’s less
fortunate, Bennett said.
“The legal process is almost
complete now,” Gerlach stated.
Anyone wishing to donate to
the SOS or to volunteer should
contact Gerlach at 678-910-
7213 or Steele at 770-490-
5789.
Fireworks
Continued from front
well,” Lively said, “but to be cautious we are still not doing
giveaways or selling glow necklaces as we have in the past.
We are hoping by next year we can resume those activities.”
The fireworks show will be simulcast on WYBO 929
The Soul Mine as well.
“There is no set time to begin the event,” Lively con
tinued. “It just starts when the first car shows up, usually
around 5 p.m.”
He went on to say that thanks to local citizens, civic clubs
and businesses, the DDA was able to meet its fundraising
goal for the show.
“We have actually exceeded the goal and expect a few
more donations to still come in,” he said, adding that the
group is still accepting donations.

Beginning her employment
with the Keysville Nursing
Home and Rehab in 1981,
67-year-old Betty Streetman
has worked at the facility since
before her boss was bom.
Administrator Tiffany Reese
has nothing but praise for the
certified nursing assistant, her
elder by almost three decades.
“She has the hardest job in
the building,” Reese said of
Streetman.
The nursing home is cel
ebrating Streetman’s 40 years
of employment June 30 with a
luncheon and a surprise mon
etary bonus.
Streetman entered the health
held after she tried her hand
at babysitting and after taking
care of her sick aunt. Her moth-
er-in-law thought she had a
knack for taking care of others
and suggested that she apply
for a care giving position. The
Keysville Nursing Home hired
her and sent her through the
proper training. Four decades
later, Streetman still works at
the facility she calls “home.”
“She takes care of one of the
residents that used to work with
her,” Reese pointed out.
Streetman said she has no
intentions of retiring anytime
soon.
“I am the type of person that,
if I can go then I am going,”
Streetman said. “My children
get on me about it, but I like
it. I like taking care of people.”
