Another civil suit addresses
legality of Augusta Judicial split

Black Lives Voters Mat
ter Fund Incorporated filed a
lawsuit June 14 in the Superior
Court of Richmond County
claiming the Augusta Judicial
Circuit split violates the Geor
gia Constitution.
The complaint names Gov
ernor Brian Kemp and Rich
mond, Burke and Columbia
Counties as the defendants.
Black Lives Voters Matter
contend the enactment of Sen
ate Bill 9 had a discriminatory
purpose and discriminatory
effect in violation of the Voting
Rights Act of 1965. The com
plaint states that to void their
votes for Jared Williams as the
District Attorney of the entire
Augusta Judicial Circuit is in
violation of their Due Process
rights. It also claims that Sen
ate Bill 9 nullifies votes leaving
voters with no recourse, all in
violation of both Federal law
and the Georgia Constitution.
The complaint points out
that Columbia County Ad
ministrator Scott Johnson has
publicly stated that one of the
reasons for the judicial split is
that Jared Williams received
33% of the votes in Columbia
County and white incumbent
Natalie Paine received 66%
percent of the votes.
Additionally, the petition
states that Senate Bill 9 was
based upon cost savings as
a pretext, but an economic
analysis shows that the costs
to all three counties will in
crease and additional state and
county funds will be needed.
The complaint alleges that the
Columbia County Commission
knew that it would cost state
taxpayers and taxpayers in all
three counties additional funds.
Additional state funds were
allocated to Columbia County
but not Richmond or Burke
Counties to assist in the circuit
split, it says.
The desire to create a sepa
rate judicial circuit for Co
lumbia County denies African
American lawyers, who reside
in the county, the right to run
for a Superior Court judgeship,
when considering the racial
makeup of the original Augusta
Judicial Circuit is close to 50%
as opposed to a new Columbia
County Circuit that is majority
white, the complaint contends.
Burke County filed a re
sponse June 21 stating the
Public given chance to weigh-in on redrawing districts
Government officials are
giving citizens the chance to
weigh-in on defining district
boundaries.
The law requires that states
redraw their congressional and
legislative district boundaries
after every 10-year U.S. Cen
sus. The intention behind the
mandated move is to accom
modate population shifts that
may cause districts to become
unequal.
The House and Senate Reap
portionment Committees are
holding ten meetings in cities
across Georgia. The first one
began June 28, at the state
capitol in Atlanta.
The town hall meeting in
Athens will take place Tues
day, July 6 from 5-7 p.m. at
Building F at Athens Technical
College.
The Savannah Rapids Pavil
ion, 3300 Evans to Locks Rd,
Martinez, will host a town hall
meeting July 7 from 5-7 p.m.
Attendees may sign up to
speak at either location begin
ning at 4:30 p.m. Comments
should last no more than five
minutes.
Written comments may be
submitted to The Georgia
General Assembly’s website.
Additionally, both hearings
will be live-streamed on the
website.
Inside-out grant no longer includes signage
The Downtown Develop
ment Authority recently made
a couple of changes to the
Inside-Out Grant.
The board met June 23
and voted to officially lower
the maximum amount that
businesses may receive from
$1,000 to $750.
“Nobody has asked for
$1,000 for years,” Director
Don Lively said.
Additionally, the panel voted
to exclude signage projects
from the list of eligible im
provements.
The intent of the grant pro
gram is to encourage private
investment in improvements
in downtown commercial
structures. A dollar-for-dollar
match is required. Applicants
must comply with all City of
Waynesboro permitting, abide
by codes and ordinances and
follow proper policies and
procedures required by the City
of Waynesboro and its Office
of Planning and Development.
Inside-Out is a reimburse
ment grant program. Appli
cants must submit all support
ing documents and wait for
notification of approval from
the DDA before any improve
ments are made. Submitting
an application at least 30 days
in advance is recommended.
Work outlined on the appli
cation that is started prior to
receiving the DDA’s official
approval will disqualify the
applicants.
Farmers market

“What led to our demise, and
a lot of other facilities we have
talked to, is splitting up posi
tive and negative roommates,”

unprecedented circumstances
that demanded guidance from
state and federal health pro
fessionals. “I hope it has been
learned not to do that.”
Reese said splitting up the
roommates helped spread the

For more than a decade, the
ALG has operated an online
farmers market that sources
only from sustainable farmers/
producers from the CSRA. The
market started as a small wom-

products could be ordered
from local farmers and pickup
was held in a nearby home, a
spokesperson said. Today, the
Reese said knowing that
most staff and residents are
vaccinated brings a sense of
comfort as the Delta vari
ant becomes more dominant.
Eighty-four percent of the staff
and 75% of the residents have
received the vaccine. The rest
have elected not to be vac
cinated.
Reese is a strong advocate
for vaccinating against the
Coronavirus. She said she
would never want to relive
the stressful 6-week pandemic
experience that cost 11 patients
their lives. At one point the fa
cility had 45 positive patients.

Downtown Augusta records.

Activities and visitations

lockdown periods during the
height of the deadly disease,

struggle with the anxiety of
getting used to socializing

Adele Grubbs has been appointed to
hear the civil case hied by attorney Wil
