Proposed amendments
define camper stays
SHELLIE SMITLEY

An ordinance amending the
county’s Land Development
Code includes four definitions
that pertain to campgrounds.
The Burke County Plan
ning Commission and Zoning
Appeals Board voted unani
mously June 22 to accept
the proposed amendments.
If the Board of Commission
ers adopts the changes next
month, campgrounds will be
defined by three categories.
The amendments define the
length of time people can stay
in campers:
Commercial campgrounds
refer to an area of real property
with 50 or more campsites and
maintained for occupancy of
no more than 18 consecutive
months. The minimum lot size
is 45 feet by 50 feet and there
must be at least 20 feet between
campsites.
Recreational campgrounds
are areas of real property on
which 49 or less campsites
are located. Temporary oc
cupancy shall not exceed 30
consecutive days or more than
60 days in a calendar year.The
Hero

of serious health conditions,
McGee is the only employed
person in the household.
There are times when it oc
curred to him to just give up,
but he quickly rebounded and
carried on with his mission,
he said.
Corporal Gary Jenkins of the
Waynesboro Police Depart
ment noticed McGee walking
to work and many times of
fered him a ride. Something
in his heart, told him that he
could make a difference in the
young man’s life.
Jenkins decided to start
a GoFundMe page to raise
money so McGee could get
a ride back-and-forth to work
through Burke County Transit.
The goal was to raise $1000,
so that at $10 per day, McGee
could ride back-and-forth to
work for six months. Riding
to work will increase Tracy’s
availability and allow him to
work more hours.
Jenkins act of kindness
brought attention to the young
man’s dedication. Wendy’s
Owner, Mike Iezzi, said the
revelation that McGee walked
to work every day surprised
him. The company made a
donation to the cause.
“We didn’t know how he got
here,” Iezzi said. “But we have
always been able to depend

Sporting campgrounds in
clude an area of real property
on which 15 or less campsites
are maintained with temporary
occupancy not exceeding 30
consecutive days or more than
60 days in a calendar year.
RV parks shall have the same
meaning as campground.
Additionally, it shall be un
lawful for any motor home
or camper trailer to be used
as a residence for a period of
time exceeding 28 consecu
tive days or 60 calendar days
in any given year as a tem
porary residence on private
property. If the Commissioners
adopt the proposed ordinance
amendment, no existing motor
home or camper trailer shall
be relocated to another site
or be placed on a site vacated
by an existing motor home or
camper.
The Board will also vote on
changes to the deer processing
facility, incidental manufac
turing, mulching operations,
semi-trailer storage facility and
accessory structure ordinance
amendments.

General Manager Chantell
Brown said she noticed McGee
walking to work and often
pleaded with him to accept a
ride from her. It was not un
usual for him to turn it down.
McGee is a model employee,
she said.
“He is a very humble kid,”
Jenkins said. “I think we can all
learn something from Tracy.”
McGee said it will be a great
help to him to have regular
transportation to work. He
was a bit surprised by the at
tention that he received June
24. Jenkins drove him to work
where employees met him with
balloons and a local television
station waited for his arrival.
“I’ve never had anything
that big show me that much
support,” McGee said.
As of the morning of June
28, Jenkins raised more than
$8,000 for the hero who walks
to work.
“The support this young man
has gotten is overwhelming.
I expected the fundraiser to
reach its goal but not exceed
it by that much. We’re now
able to prepay for 12 months
of transit service with money
left over. The extra funds will
be used to purchase necessities
Tracy and his family need,”
Jenkins said in a statement
Monday.
