Three killed in two
Separate accidents
Three men were killed in two
separate accidents here in June.
In the first incident, a head-
on collision in the early morn
ing hours of Sunday, June 27
took the lives of both drivers.
The accident occurred on
the 1000 block of Highway
56 North. Burke County depu
ties found Jamie Alvarado, 43
of Pahokee, Fla. and Bruce
Stykeman, 61 of Davisboro,
Ga. unresponsive at the scene.
Despite efforts by emergency
personnel, both men were pro
nounced dead at the scene of
the accident.
At about 10 p.m. the next
night, June 28, a motorcycle
and a pickup truck collided at
the intersection of Ga. Hwy
305 and Bark Camp Church
Rd.
According to a report from
the Georgia State Patrol, Al
bert Paschal, 68 of Midville,
failed to yield at a stop sign at
the intersection and his Toyota
Tacoma pickup was struck in
the side by a motorcycle driven
by Logan Kicklighter, 47 of
Soperton.
Kicklighter was severely
injured and died later at Burke
Medical Center. Charges are
pending against Paschal, ac
cording to the report.
Feds investigate
Vogtle delays
Commission of Plant Vog-
tle’s Units 3 and 4 has been
delayed.
Georgia Power, which is
owned by Southern Co., origi
nally intended for Unit 3 to
be online by the end of 2021.
Delays pushed the start of
commercial generation to at
least January 2022. Work on
Unit 3 is almost complete.
Unit 4 will not likely be online
before late 2022.
Additionally, the U.S. Nucle
ar Regulatory Commission has
launched a special inspection
of the reactor’s remediation
work for the electrical cable
raceway system.
“The NRC inspection team
will focus on the electrical
cable raceway system, consist
ing primarily of conduits and
cable trays designed to route
and support the cables needed
to ensure safety related equip
ment is powered to perform its
safety functions,” according to
the NRC’s announcement.
“Electrical cable raceway
systems for commercial nucle
ar power plants are routed and
designed to prevent a single
event from disabling redundant
safety-related equipment.”
During the inspection, the NRC
will review Southern Nuclear’s
actions following the discov
ery that led to construction
remediation work, including a
review of their root cause in
vestigation, corrective actions,
construction quality assurance
process, and any potential im
plications for Unit 4.”
Throughout the country, nu
merous nuclear power plants
are being retired and decom
missioned as natural gas and
renewable generation facilities
become more competitive.
“Despite numerous retire
ments and abandonment of
planned construction projects,
nuclear energy accounts for
20% of the U.S. electricity
mix and more than half of its
carbon-free power,” according
to Power Engineering.
Vogtle 3 and 4 will be the
first nuclear reactors commis
sioned in the United States in
approximately five years.

A Letter From Heaven
When tomorrow starts without me
And I 1 m not there to see;
If the sun should rise and
find your eyes
All filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did today;
While thinking of the many things
We didn't get to say.
I know how much you love me
As much as I love you;
And each time that you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too.
When tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart
For every time you think of me,
I'm right here in your heart.
With Love, Thinking of You,
Betty, Leonard Sr., children, LeRon and Isaac;
grandchildren, Isaac, Isaiah, Stephanie, Labaron,
Cornelius and Raymond.
