BCPS approaches
fall term with caution
JADA CURD
Student Contributor
According to DPH, only
31 % of people aged 15-19 have
been vaccinated in Georgia. In
Burke County, that percentage
decreases to 15.7%.
The True Citizen asked five
local high school students
if they had been vaccinated.
Their names are withheld in
order to maintain confidential
ity of health information. There
was a mixed-bag of responses.
One student is partially vac
cinated, one student is against
vaccination, one student in
tends to get vaccinated and two
students are fully vaccinated.
“I have had one dose and my
only side effect was very mild
arm pain the day after I got the
shot,” one student said. “I did
not experience fever or any of
the other symptoms. I felt like
it was important to get the vac
cine because we have an op
portunity to protect ourselves
and those around us, so why
not take it?”
With schools in Burke Coun
ty resuming face-to-face class
es August 3, the school system
is proceeding with caution.
They provided back-to-school
COVID safety procedures on
their website. Superintendent
Angela Williams said mask
-wearing is strongly recom
mended. Per an executive or
der signed by Governor Brian
Kemp, masks are required on
school buses. According to the
Burke County Public School’s
Return to School Plan, they
also plan to increase buses
and bus routes to prevent over
crowding. Another precaution
they are taking is sanitizing ev
ery high-touch surface as well
as installing bi-polar ionization
on HVAC units to reduce the
spread of viruses
and allergens and improve
air quality. Staff and students
will also be required to main
tain a 3- feet distance while
masked and a 6- feet distance
while unmasked. Additionally,
similar to last school term, if
students or staff feel symptoms
or are generally unwell, they
are encouraged to remain at
home and be tested.
“Essentially, all things that
were in place last year,” Wil
liams said. “For the exception
of fogging after every school
day.”
All the BCPS plans align
perfectly with the American
Academy of Pediatrics that
recommended the same length
of distancing, sanitation, and
air improvement in a July 20
letter sent out to superinten
dents around the country. The
organization also promotes fre
quent hand washing and stay
ing home if students or staff
experiences any symptoms.
