Bears prepare with ferocity
Burke County High School
hosted the Georgia High
School Association scrimmage
camp July 21 and July 22.
“It’s no secret that high
school football has turned into
a year- long endeavor,” said
Head Football Coach Eric
Parker. “Our kids have been
preparing for the upcoming
season since December, with
most of the team participating
in workouts over the Christmas
break.”
The GHSA camp gives the
teams in Georgia 3 opportuni
ties to get padded work against
other schools prior to August.
One is a spring game and the
other two are in the summer at
what’s called padded camps.
Last month, the Bears attended
one hosted by McEachem High
School in Cobb County.
“We bring in five other teams
and we all rotate to different
drills which allow us to get
work against other teams,”
Parker said.
“All teams attending our
camp were 2020 playoff teams.
I love that as a head coach
because it means we get solid
work against high level com
petition,” he said. “I believe
it removes any false sense
of security we may have and
gives us a true picture of where
we stand in our preparation
efforts.”

Underdogs take national title
The Skill Factory 15U team made history on Sunday when it became the first local team to
claim the Nike Peach Jam title. This accomplishment was achieved during the ream first year
of national competition.

The team is comprised most
ly of players from the CSRA;
not a single one is ranked on
ESPN’s top 100 list. Yet, for
two weeks the young basket
ball players continued to live
up to their team name The Skill
Factory (TSF) ... right up to
the moment they clinched the
national title and made history.
When Julius Patterson began
coaching this team, one of his
top goals was to play on the
national level at the Nike Peach
Jam. This 15U team, in its first
year on the national stage,
made that goal a reality, and
not only are they the first local
team ever to compete, they
won the title after defeating
Team United 66-60 on Sunday
afternoon.
“This is the biggest tourna
ment in the world; it’s like the
basketball version of the Mas
ters,” Patterson said proudly
following the win. “First local
team with local players and
local coaches. This may never
happen again, but we plan on
doing it again. These kids will
always remember this mo
ment.”
Out of a pool of 78 of the best
teams across the nation, TSF is
now number one in the country.
Donated Land
Robert K. Bell Jr. donated a 32-acre parcel of land to Burke
County adjacent to the landfill during the July 13 monthly
meeting.
