Burke County scurries to get
vaccinated ahead of Delta variant
JADA CURD
Student Contributor
The Delta variant, 1,000
times more transmissible than
the original Coronavirus strain,
is making its way to Burke
County, as residents scurry to
prepare.
Monday morning, CVS and
Clark Drug Company were
all listed as “out-of-stock” on
vaccines.gov.
A spokesperson for the lo
cal CVS said they expected
to receive more of the vaccine
Monday afternoon after serv
ing an increased number of
people recently.
Owner Starr Clark said Clark
Drug Company was also back
on track by Monday afternoon.
Although they have seen an
increase of people, primar
ily between the ages of 40-50
years of age, getting vacci
nated over the last two weeks,
a freezer malfunction caused
the temporary out-of-stock list
ing. The drug store’s last box
of Moderna vaccines was lost
due to the lack of temperature
control.
The Georgia Department of
Public Health (DPH) reported
that Coronavirus cases are on a
steady rise throughout the state.
The agency recorded more than
10,000 new cases over the last
two weeks and Burke County
accounts for approximately 32
of those cases. The increase is
significant for Burke County,
which reported no more than
10 cases biweekly, prior to the
month of July.
DPH reports state that out of
124 COVID tests conducted in
Burke County July 8-21,9.7%
were positively identified as
the Coronavirus.
According to Chief Nursing
Officer Debbie Burch, Burke
Medical Center saw seven new
cases last week come through
its emergency room depart
ment. All the patients were
discharged within 48 hours.
The Delta variant is making
its rounds quickly though. It
accounts for 83% of reported
COVID cases around the coun
try, up from 50% at the begin
ning of the month, according to
the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. Unvaccinated
people account for 99.5% of
COVID-related deaths and
97% of hospitalizations. The
CDC is receiving scrutiny for
continuing to recommend that
vaccinated people may not
have to wear masks.
Despite the increase of
cases, vaccination rates remain
low locally. According to the
DPH interactive dashboard
July 26, 34% of the 22,271
Burke County residents are
fully vaccinated and 37% have
received one dose of the vac
cine.
Vaccines are available and
recommended for people over
the age of 12.
The number of people re
ceiving the vaccine decreased
tremendously over the summer,
in spite of the increased threat
of the Delta variant. The DPH
Vaccine Distribution Dash
board reports that during Feb
ruary and March, vaccination
numbers often reached more
than 200 per day. In contrast,
vaccination rates during the
months of May, June and July
averaged 30 to 50 per day.
