New COVID cases hits highest
daily numbers since February
“Cases are surging in Burke
County,” according to County
Nurse Manager Gina Richard
son’s Facebook post August 1.
According to the Georgia
DPH County Indicator Report,
Burke County is considered to
be a high transmission county
because of its 14-day con
firmed COVID case rate of
111 per 100kpeople. Counties
receive the high transmission
status when cases in a 14-day
period are greater than 100/
per 100,000 residents and the
percentage of positive test re
sults exceeds 10%. During the
period of July 15-28,15.8% of
165 conducted COVID tests
produced a positive result.
DPH issued a news release
August 2 encouraging vac
cination.
“The Georgia Department of
Public Health (DPH) is urging
Georgians to get vaccinated
as the number of new CO
VID-19 cases increases daily
and the Delta variant spreads,”
the press release stated. “The
COVID case rate in Georgia
has increased 204% over the
last 14-day period. The Cen
ters for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) estimates
that the Delta variant accounts
for 78% of new cases around
the state. Vaccination is more
urgent than ever, the press
release says.
New cases totaled 4,612, Au
gust 1, the highest daily num
ber since mid-February. Hos
pitalizations have increased
by approximately 50% in the
last 14 days, and deaths have
increased by about 18% in
the same period. Vaccination
has stalled statewide and only
40% of Georgians are fully
vaccinated.
According to the DPH in
teractive dashboard August 2,
Burke County’s vaccination
rate remains stagnant at 34%.
“The highest spread of cases
and severe outcomes are hap
pening in places with low
vaccination rates, and virtu
ally all hospitalizations and
deaths continue to be among
the unvaccinated. Individuals
are considered fully vaccinated
two weeks after their final dose
of vaccine. The delta variant is
causing some ‘vaccine break
through infections,’ meaning
infections in fully vaccinated
people, but even so, most
breakthrough infections are
mild,” the press release says.
In high transmission areas,
like Burke County, the CDC
recommends everyone, includ
ing fully vaccinated people,
wear masks in public indoor
settings
