Life Lines
By Linda Lariscey
THE BATTLEFIELD OF LIFE
He heals the brokenhearted and
binds up their wounds.
Psalms 147:3 (ESV)
The battlefield of life can intensify at any given moment.
The devil knows his time is short, so his strategy is to wear
out the saints. We must learn to fight the good fight of faith
when sudden trials come our way. Compounded attacks
can wound us and cause us to doubt the Father’s love for
us. We must be strong in the Lord and the power of His
might. How do you think Jesus bore up under the torture
of the cross? The Father infused him with divine strength.
No doubt our nation has suddenly morphed into something
that many of us no longer recognize. What I see today
reminds me of the prophetic words of Psalms 2. Why do the
nations rage, and the people plot a vain thing? The kings
of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel
together, against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
"Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their
cords from us." And yet we read further that God sits in the
heavens and laughs at them. The joy of the Lord must be
our strength during these troubling times.
The Lord will come to us and heal our broken hearts. He
will bind up our wounds on the battlefield of life. We must
be willing to repent from the vain things or ways of thinking
that contributed to our pain. He will avenge us from every
attack of the devil. He is coming to console us to give us
beauty for ashes and the oil of joy for mourning. Open wide
the gates of your heart to receive it!

Sardis
after serving 20 months, due
to his bid for the mayor’s seat.
Those interested in running for
his post, which has 20 months
remaining, have until August
27 to qualify.
“I want to better the city,”
he said and pointed out that he
headed the hiring of a contrac
tor for the wastewater plant. He
hopes to bring more to Sardis
that benefits the youth and se
nior citizens. He also hopes to
bring in more businesses.
“I feel that I am best quali
fied for the mayor’s position,”
he said and pointed out that he
assisted the city in coming out
of the red by saving it $30,000
in a year through working with
its budget.
Sardis votes at large, mean
ing there are no districts. Reg
istered
voters cast votes on each
vacant seat. In the past, people
would come in and qualify for
a certain seat in council, but
with the city’s new charter, ev
eryone gets to make a selection
for each vacancy and the high
est two who receive the most
votes will win the election.
The following candidates
have qualified for the Novem
ber election: Mayor - Carol
Edmonds (Incumbent) and
Roger Lane. Council - Jona
than Cates, Wade Herndon,
Angela Allen, Rolene Oliver
(Incumbent) and Terry Win
ston.
Winston said he is running
because he wants to be a part
of what is going on in the city.
This is his first try at politics.
He is interested in growing
business and implementing
more recreational activities for
the kids.
“It is not a bad place,” he
said of Sardis. “It just needs a
little more upgrading.”
Herndon said he would like
to see more police officers on
Gough
A lack of growth inspired
people to leave in search of
a better life, which in turn
caused the community to spiral
downward.
Today, Gough has few busi
nesses and numerous aban
doned homes. The association
intends to face its zoning chal
lenges and its lack of govern
mental structure. They expect
some resistance to change.
“We are trying to advocate
for the community and trying
to rally the support of the resi
dents,” Stokes said and pointed
out that Sheriff Alfonzo Wil
liams and Commissioner Lu-
cious Abrams have pledged
their support.
Continued from front
the street and improvements
with the water and sewer sys
tems.
“A lot of people want change
and somebody has to stand up
and do it so I just took it upon
myself to be that person,” he
said and added that as a coun
cil person he will be willing
to listen to the residents and
make the appropriate changes.
“We obviously can’t satisfy
everybody, but I think we can
come to an agreement with
the majority of the people and
implement the changes that
we can.”
One four-year term is not
enough for incumbent Rolene
Oliver.
“I feel like when I came in
to council, I wasn’t sure what
it all pertained to,” she said. “I
have learned so much over the
last four years that I feel like I
need another four years to re
ally make things happen.”
She wants to see a greater
focus on senior and youth ac
tivities. She believes that she
has informed citizens about the
use of SPLOST funds while
she has served on the panel.
“We have funds,” she said.
“We can make things happen.”
Cates issued the following
statement August 22: “Sardis
is a town that I plan on liv
ing in for years to come. I'm
running because with a fresh
mindset and creative ideas, I
believe I can help push Sardis
in the right direction to help
it prosper. (Specifically), by
reviewing the budgets of all
departments and to ensure that
they are running efficiently
(and) examining ways to help
bring in more businesses and
future residents and making it
more desirable for people to
want to live here.”
Edmunds and Allen were
unable to be reached for com
ment.
Continued from front
The Back to Gough Com
mittee will hold its 11th annual
Gough Festival at the Gough
Park 5-10 p.m. September 4.
The Association’s panel re
cently voted for the com
mittee to operate under its
umbrella. The Association’s
panel of officers includes;
Paul Atwell, President, Ruby
McCullough, Vice President,
Manessa Stokes, Secretary,
Joann Kelley, Treasurer and
Deloris Atwell, Chaplain.
“This was our village, it was
like a family town,” Stokes
said. “Everybody knew every
body and everybody looked
out for everybody. We can get
that back.”
