Shadrack Street project heads for the finish line
SHELLIE SMITLEY
thetruecitizen.shellie@gmail.com
“We can actually get excited
now,” City Manager Valerie
Kirkland told the City Council
Members Monday.
After many pandemic-
related material delays, the
Shadrack Street Project is
finally headed toward comple
tion. Public Works Director
Jody Ellison announced to the
panel that the fusion machine
showed up and the fusion tech
is in town. He anticipated that
work would resume Wednes
day as long as the weather
holds out.
Ellison was not concerned
about another obstacle added
to the list of unanticipated
troubles that have plagued the
endeavor. Currently, there is
a conflict with an AT&T line
close to 4th Street.
“AT&T will be in the pro
cess of rerouting that line, in
conjunction with our contrac
tors, they are going to get that
done,” he said. That is not an
extra charge to us because
it’s their fault that they went
through that line.”
Ellison said he could not
project the exact date of com
pletion but would know more
after the weather clears up and
he begins to see progress again.
“It’s been a long time com
ing,” Ellison said. “We have
had some great setbacks.”
IN OTHER NEWS, speak
ing on behalf of the Downtown
Development Authority, Rex
Gerlinger announced a Christ
mas laser light show to take
place during the Christmas on
Liberty celebration. Gerlinger
presented the panel with a
video example of what the
20-30-minute light show will
look like.
The DDA will begin taking
pledges through the middle of
November to cover the $5,500
cost.
“As you all know, we have
had a rough 18-24 months,” he
said. “There are times when the
Council needs to get together
with the DDA and other mem
bers to just try to do things to
get the constituents to smile for
a change.”
