SITTING ON THE BACK BURNER AND FEELING NEGLECTED
Burke County recently
applied for and received a
$750,000 community block
grant with the intention of
spending the funds for the
public facility rehabilitation of
the Burke County Recreation
and Boxing Club. They said the
project will benefit 92 people.
Many cities and counties
applied for the money. The
City of Broxton will spend
their grant funds on water
improvements that benefit 192
people. Likewise, the City of
Clayton is spending the same
allotment as Burke County
on a water project that will
beneht 444 people. The city
of Cadwell is spending their
that will beneht 212 people.
The Cities of Danielsville and
Dawson are also working on
sewer improvements to the
tune of $750,000 that beneht
more than 180 people in each
municipality.
There are a host of Geor
gia counties and cities that
proposed using the money to
improve water or sewer prob
lems that change the lives and
living conditions for hundreds
of residents.
Our county lets the commu
nity of Gough go without any
water or sewer improvements
at all, forced to endure the bur
den of a 100-year-old platting
plan that leaves the community
with little hope for develop
ment or expansion.
County Manager Merv Wal
drop stated last month that the
Burke County Commissioners
have the same responsibility
and obligation to the residents
of Gough as they do the rest of
the county.
I hope the board is not still
patting themselves on the back
for contributing to a communi
ty park that offers the children
no restrooms and no drinking
fountains, while the recreation
center and boxing club that
Sardis residents feel is too far
away to utilize, gets a facelift.
During the last city council
meeting in Midville, there was
disgruntled talk about feeling
ignored and not having ac
cess to county services. For
quite some time, the City of
Keysville paid the state $500 a
month in hnes, while it strug
gled to hgure out a way to pay
for a second well. Recently, the
BOC erupted into discussion
over whether to pay for a tree
that got cut down in Vidette.
Isn’t it time to quit putting
Gough on the back burner?
Has the panel heard the cry of
parents in Sardis? Did you read
the words of frustration that
came out of Midville? Could
you do more to help Keysville?
Can you hnd money to invest
in Vidette? What is going on
in Girard?
The county government is
a vital asset and resource for
Burke County residents. Burke
County includes all of the out
lying cities and communities.
The county does great things
for people who live in and
around Waynesboro, but when
it comes to the smaller cities
there is a gap.
Each district has a commis
sioner who represents them.
Why aren’t the representatives
bringing the issues the district
has to the table instead of en
tertaining individual requests?
Why do the commissioners not
attend city council meetings in
their district?
While I am sure the recre
ation department, which sits
within reach for Waynesboro
residents, is overjoyed with
the attention the county gives
it, the outlying cities sing a
different tune.
In the words of a famous Ja
net Jackson song, “What have
you done for me lately?”
receives $750,000 grant
County
The Burke County Recre
ation Department will receive
a $750,000 grant for public
facility rehabilitation of the
Burke County Recreation and
Boxing Club.
The project will beneht 92
persons, of whom 71 (77%)
are low-to-moderate income.
The 4,650 square foot building
is in need of rehabilitation in
order to efficiently serve the
current users. The total project
cost is $814,491, with $64,491
in match and leverage funds,
according to County Manager
Merv Waldrop.
Governor Brian Kemp an
nounced Monday that 60 local
governments will be awarded
more than $43 million in Com
munity Development Block
Grants (CDBG) to help im
prove their communities. The
U.S. Department of Hous
ing and Urban Development
(HUD) allocated the annual
funds to Georgia’s CDBG pro
gram, which is administered
by the Georgia Department of
Community Affairs, according
to press release.
“Georgians in these 60 coun
ties and neighboring communi
ties will directly beneht from
the quality-of-life improve
ments provided by the CDBG
program,” Governor Kemp
said. “Our infrastructure in
vestments are yielding great
dividends, attracting major
manufacturers and jobs to our
state and helping keep Georgia
the number one state for busi
ness.”
The CDBG program is avail
able to eligible local govern
ments. The annual grants
support community projects,
create jobs, and assist low and
moderate-income citizens. This
year’s grant awards will fund
$29.9 million in infrastructure
projects, $5.8 million in hous
ing and multi-activity projects,
and $7.4 million in various
building projects.
The CDBG grants are award
ed annually on a competitive
basis. This year, Georgia’s
Department of Community
Affairs received more than 100
applications for more than $70
million.
