Wheeler
Continued from front
“One of them is a lump but
the rest of them, for some rea
son, women feel they can have
those symptoms and still not
think they have breast cancer,
because there is not a lump.”
Wheeler said and pointed out
the importance of early test
ing when it comes to racial
disparities associated with the
disease. Statistically speak
ing, black women have a 42%
higher risk of dying from the
cancer compared to their white
counterparts, she said and at
tributed the higher mortality
rate to later diagnoses.
Wheeler hosts, “Reduce
Your Risk” breast health walks
with partners/breast cancer
survivors Carolyn Byrd and
Angela Prince throughout the
CSRA. They are more than
just marches. They are events
where survivors share their sto
ries and information is dissemi
nated. Wheeler is passionate
about breast cancer education.
She is a global educator with
the Know Your Femons Foun
dation, a campaign that seeks
to improve early detection for
breast cancer worldwide. She
is also the Patient Navigator
for the Breast and Cervical
Cancer Program (BCCP), im
plemented through the Georgia
Department of Public Health
(DPH). Wheeler, who covers
13 counties, is beginning to
focus more heavily on Burke
County.
“We want to get out into the
community and have women
come and really talk about self-
care, breast health, and breast
self-checks,” she said. “It is so
important.”
Burke County women cur
rently have access to the BCCP
through the local DPH office.
An appointment results in a
clinical breast exam, a wom
en’s wellness exam, a gyneco
logical assessment and then a
mammogram is scheduled to
take place at Burke Medical
Center.
Uninsured or women with
high-deductible insurance
plans, over the age of 40 years
old, with incomes at 200% be
low the federal poverty level,
pay nothing for the services.
The threshold is generous.
For example, a woman in a
household with four people
could have a combined gross
monthly income of $4,417 and
still be eligible for the exams
at no cost. Women aged 21-39
years old are charged an office
visit with the charge based on
their income.
Appointments can be made
directly with the DPH of
fice or through Wheeler who
navigates the patients through
a path to healthy living.
“This program is so under
utilized,” Wheeler said and
pointed out that Burke County
is not unlike other counties in
that women are generally not
getting mammograms done.
She attributes it to lack of
insurance, fear and COVID’s
isolating effects.
There is fear attached to the
approximate 15-minute mam
mogram process. One breast
is compressed at a time by a
plastic device that spreads it.
The compression of the breast
lasts about 30 seconds.
“It can be uncomfortable, but
it’s temporary and you owe it
to yourself to be screened,”
Wheeler tells apprehensive
patients.
As a Patient Navigator, she
is aware that women will not
be concerned about a mam
mogram if they are dealing
with homelessness or food
insecurity. Wheeler addresses
the “whole woman” as part of
her position. During personal
conversations, she assesses
the barriers the women face in
leading a healthy, successful
life. Barriers are addressed
with every woman who partici
pates in the program, whether
they have cancer or not. If
a woman is diagnosed with
breast cancer, steps are taken
to sign them up with state-
funded insurance that pays for
their treatment. Wheeler takes
her job seriously and strives to
promote positive change in the
lives of the women with whom
she crosses paths.
“When I meet with a patient,
whether it is in-person or on the
phone we talk about all of the
things that are going on,” she
said. “Does she have food inse
curity, what is going on in her
family life? I have resources
for pretty much everything.”
More information about
breast cancer is available at

Life Lines
By Linda Lariscey
CREATED FOR HIS GLORY
... so that in all things God may
be gloriTied through Jesus Christ, to
whom be the glory and the power
forever and ever. Amen.
1 Peter 4:10-19 (BSB)
Moses asked God to show Him His glory, and He did!
He revealed to Moses His goodness and His name in his
presence. God caused all of His goodness to pass in front
of Moses. His mercy and compassion engulfed Moses
showing him His glory, which is His character.
The earth is crying out for the glory of God. We are on
the verge of a great spiritual awakening. Are you “woke”
yet? God is calling you to be a vessel of His glory on earth.
Through you, others can see His glory. Yield yourself to
God and draw close to Him now. He will pour out His Spirit
of glory on you. God will display His glory through you so
your life can be a testimony of His nature, a living epistle
for all to read.
Don’t be an Ichabod! It’s unfortunate if this is someone’s
name but far worse if this is their lot in life. It means the glory
of God has departed or, more precisely, He is presence
less in your life. It is a form of godliness that has no power
and no glory. Get rid of the I, and what you have left is the
word chabod, which means God's weighty, beautiful glory
in Hebrew! Give up your life for Jesus’ life in you and live
in His glory.
