Townhall meeting goes off without a hitch WHAT’S NEXT?

As Sardis citizens prepare
to vote November 2, five can
didates explained their visions
for the small city during a pre
election townhall meeting.
The Sunday afternoon event,
October 10, began with the city
recognizing recently deceased
councilman Arthur Long’s 17
years of service. The city pre
sented his family with a plaque
of appreciation.
Afterward, Burke County
Commissioner Tommy Nix
presented each of the candi
dates with questions provided
to him by the general public.
Councilwoman Rolene Oli
ver, Leroy Lane, Roger Lane,
Jonathan Cates, Terry Winston
and Wade Herndon addressed
the crowd of approximately
25 people.
Most of the candidates ex
pressed a desire to see the
small city grow in the areas of
recreation and business. The
city’s water issues were also a
common theme. There seemed
a shared belief, amongst all of
the candidates, that Sardis has
lost some of what made it a
more vital place in past years.
Leroy Lane said he believed
the council should focus on
citizens’ desires and expecta
tions for the city’s growth.
Roger Lane agreed and stated
that the authority and power
needs to be put back in the
citizens’ hands. Oliver stated
she felt the city needs to follow
through on the path of growth
that has already started. Cates
said he felt that the city needs
continued improvement to
recoup some services it has
lost. Winston said he wanted to
promote more unity throughout
the community. Herndon point
ed to a strong need to solve the
city’s water issues and add to
its police department.
“Improving the existing
storefronts that we have,”
Cates said. “Right now, they
are an eyesore. Vacant build
ings do not present a good
image for the City of Sardis.”
Herndon was on the same
page when it came to shopping
and entertainment options.
He stated that geographically,
Sardis is strangled off from the
“big city.” He advocated for
more organized recreational
activities for youth and more
festivals and events.
“We like small town living,”
he pointed out. “That is why we
are here.”
Oliver answered a question
pertaining to conflict when it
comes to enforcing ordinances
that have been in existence for
years.
“It seems like everything we
are trying to enforce, that is
already in place, because we
have done things the good-ole-
boy way, we haven’t been fair
with everybody. It seems like
we pick and choose who can
do what. If you want to enforce
something then you have to do
it straight across the board,”
she said.
Winston stated that Sardis’s
senior population is the back
bone of the community. He
spoke about the need for a
place where they can gather
during the day.
“Yes, I can work with the
council, and working to see

that that gets done,” he said.
“I feel that we can do anything
that is presented before us, if
we work together.”
Herndon said his experience
in public safety and public
works is an asset for the city.
“I know the water system
from the water tower to the
water faucet,” he said. “I bring
a lot to the table through train
ing , education and experience.”
Mayor Carol Edmund did
not attend the event. Her op
ponent Roger Lane answered
a question regarding rumors
that the city’s budget has been
mishandled. Lane said he was
asked to takeover the budget
approximately 20 months ago
and found that there was not
much money in its general
fund account. He attributed
the city’s money issues to poor
money management.

The final question to Roger
Lane caught Nix by surprise.
“It is rumored that you want
to close some churches in town
when you take office and I
don’t hardly believe that,Ihave
known you for more 20 years,
so what is the deal there,” the
commissioner asked.
Roger Lane dismissed the al
legation and said he had no au
thority to close down churches
and as a pastor, he could not
“face God with that action.”
Nix pointed out that this
election is different this year,
in that more people willingly
reached out to get involved,
versus asking people to mn for
public office.
“It’s refreshing,” he said.
Incumbent candidate Carol
Edmunds and Roger Lane
are vying for the position of
Mayor. Citizens can vote for
two council candidates during
this local race. Cates, Hern
don, Angela Allen, Oliver and
Winston are all running for the
same council seats, the seat
vacated by Arthur Long and
the seat held by Oliver which
is expiring. Ralph Odom and
Leroy Lane seek to fill Roger
Lane’s vacant council seat.
In addition to Edmunds,
Odom and Allen did not attend
the event.
