Burke County netters are wrapping up regular season
From Staff Reports
Burke County’s volleyball
team had a challenging week,
playing three matches in four
days.
On Tuesday, they played AR
Johnson at home and won the
match 2-0 (25-15/25-15). Last
Thursday was not only Senior
Night, but they played two re
gion matches against Salem of
Conyers and Hephzibah.
“The first match against
Salem was intense and went
back and forth,” said head
coach David Skinner. “Our
fans were tremendous and cer
tainly helped us in this game.
We won the first set 25-17. The
second set was a fight to the
finish. We made some critical
passing errors midway through
the match, but I thought our
girls responded well to the
adversity and left it all on the
floor. We won the second set
27-25 for the 2-0 win. In the
second game against Hephzi
bah, we executed offensively
and defensively a little better
and won the match 2-0 (25-12
/ 25-8). We celebrated our se
niors (Cornelia Johnson, Rakh-
ia Abrams, Kaili Williams and
Jemerya Dixon) afterwards.
They've been an absolute joy
to have in our program and
will leave it in a good place
because of their contributions.
I'm excited to see them go to
the next chapter in their lives
and do great things.”
Burke County played its
final regular season match at
home yesterday (Tuesday),
but results were not available
at press time.

Brookwood beats the Spartans
From Staff Reports
Edmund Burke Academy fell
36-26 to Brookwood on Friday
night, bringing the varsity foot
ball team’s record to 2-5.
Head coach Aaron Phillips
said he thought the Spartans
played well at times in the
matchup.
“Defense executed at a high-
level for the most part,” he
said. “Brookwood is a very
explosive team. They have
played a really really tough
schedule, and they have a great
quarterback who will be a col
lege quarterback one day. They
also have four receivers who
are very good in space.”
Phillips said that proved to
be a challenge for EBA, who
doesn’t see an offense of that
caliber week in and week out.
“Their office wants to throw
the ball ninety percent of the
time so it is a big challenge
for our kids,” he said. “We
had a few turnovers and some
special teams mistakes that led
to them scoring twenty-one
points. Hopefully we can get
those things worked out over
the next two weeks. Overall I
was really proud of the kids.
We played hard and we’re
headed in the right direction.
A lot of our young guys are
really stepping up along with
a few older guys”
EBA has an open week this
weekend, but when they return
to the held on Oct. 22, it will
be against one of the school’s
biggest rivals — Thomas Jef
ferson Academy.
“This is a rivalry game we all
circle on the calendar,” Phillips
said. “It’s also our first region
game. We know them very
well, and they are a good foot
ball team that’s well coached.
They’re also the two-time de
fending single A champions.
I think our kids are ready and
accept the challenge; we just
have to go out and execute.”
