Public invited to honor local veterans
Residents are invited to show
support for U.S. veterans dur
ing two American Legion
events.
Each December on National
Wreaths Across America Day,
the mission to remember, hon
or and teach, is carried out by
wreath-laying ceremonies at
Arlington National Cemetery,
as well as at more than 2,500
additional locations in all 50
U.S. states, at sea and abroad.
Locally, American Legion
Post 120 has announced its
participation in the Wreaths
Across America National Sa
lute to Veterans to be con
ducted Saturday, December
18,2021.
According to the Wreaths
Across America website,
Morrill Worcester, owner of
Worcester Wreath Company,
was a 12-year-old paper boy
when he won a trip to Washing
ton D.C. where the Arlington
National Cemetery made an
impression on him.
In 1992, Worcester Wreath
had a surplus of wreaths near
the end of the holiday season,
and Worcester realized he had
an opportunity to honor veter
ans. Arrangements were made
for the wreaths to be placed
annually at Arlington in one of
the older sections of the cem
etery that had been receiving
fewer visitors.
The annual tribute went on
quietly for several years, until
2005, when a photo of the
stones at Arlington, adorned
with wreaths and covered in
snow, circulated around the
internet.
Unable to donate thou
sands of wreaths to each state,
Worcester began sending seven
wreaths to every state, one for
each branch of the military,
and for POW/MIAs. In 2006,
with the help of the Civil Air
Patrol and other civic organi
zations, simultaneous wreath
laying ceremonies were held
at over 150 locations around
the country.
The Patriot Guard Riders
volunteered as escorts for the
wreaths going to Arlington.
This began the annual “Veter
ans Honor Parade” that travels
the east coast in early Decem
ber, according to the website.
In 2007, the Worcester fam
ily, along with veterans, and
other groups and individuals
who had helped with their
annual veterans’ wreath cer
emony in Arlington, formed
Wreaths Across America, a
non-profit 501 -(c)(3) organiza
tion, to continue and expand
this effort, and support other
groups around the country who
wanted to do the same.
In 2008, over 300 locations
held wreath-laying ceremonies
in every state, Puerto Rico
and 24 overseas cemeteries.
Over 100,000 wreaths were
placed on veterans’ graves.
Over 60,000 volunteers partici
pated. December 13,2008 was
unanimously voted by the U.S.
Congress as “Wreaths Across
America Day.”
In 2014, Wreaths Across
America and its network of
volunteers laid over 700,000
memorial wreaths at 1,000 lo
cations in the U.S. and beyond,
including ceremonies at the
Pearl Harbor Memorial, as well
as Bunker Hill, Valley Lorge
and the sites of the September
11 tragedies.
AND THE WINNER IS...
Cami Sasser, a fifth-grader at Edmund
Burke Academy, sailed above the com
petition in our annual Spooky Story
Contest with her story “The Girl They
Thought was Buried Alive.” Sasser gar
nered 61 percent of the votes. Coming
in second place was Brynlie Riggs, an
EBA sixth-grader whose story “Do You
Believe in Monsters” held just over 10
percent of the vote. Both girls are stu
dents in Amanda Brett’s English class.
Congratulations to all the finalists from
EBA, Blakeney Elementary School and
Faith Christian Academy, and thank you
to all the students who participated and
the teachers who encourage them.

Memorial Gardens. The dead
