Senior resident needs
help with a new well

Seventy-five-year-old Julia
Lakes has been without run
ning water for six months.
The Burke County native
depends on a fixed income
that doesn’t allow for big
expenses like digging a new
well. She lives by herself in a
single-wide trailer on her own
property, where she has re
sided since 1998. She struggles
with arthritis. Her sister is also
up in years and recently had a
hip replacement. Her mother
is in a nursing home. She has
no children and her husband
is deceased.
“At first the water quit com
ing but you could see it coming
to the top,” she said and added
that a new well pump didn’t
remedy the issue.
Her cousin’s husband helps
Julia in obtaining bottled
water. But bathing, washing
dishes, laundry, and keeping
the house clean have become
daunting tasks after so much
time has passed.
“I can’t begin to tell you how
hard it is,” she said. “You can
do without mostly anything
but water.”
She catches rain water to
flush the toilet. She bathes out
of a dishpan.
“I have a box of clothes that
need washing,” she said and
pointed out that she is hopeful
that her sister will take her to
the laundrymat soon. Julia has
a license but no car to drive.
“If I can get water then I can
get things cleaned up,” she
said. “Everything just contin
ues to pile up. I need to get my
place back in order so I feel
more comfortable.”
Out of frustration, Julia con
tacted acting Mayor James
Chick Jones for help.
“At the time, I didn’t know
who to turn to,” she said. “So,
I was asking him how you go
about doing this stuff. I never
asked for help for anything
before. I thought he would
Julia Lakes
know.”
The mayor has set up an
account at The First National
Bank, 626 N. Liberty St. Any
one who is able to assist with
a monetary donation can ask
to deposit funds in the Julia
Lakes - James Jones account.
It will cost more than $4,000 to
replace Julia’s well.
Mayor James Chick Jones is asking the community to help raise the funds to assist
Senior resident Julia Lakes in obtaining a new well.

Girard Mayor William Cox
swore in Greg Moxley No
vember 4 to take the vacated
city council seat of Mary Alice
Mobley.
Mobley resigned effective
September 1 for health reasons.
Moxley will finish out the term
which expires in December
2023. The Mayor and Council
appointed him to the position.
“He is a property owner and
has a good job,” said Mayor
Cox.
This is the first time Moxley
has taken on a local govern
ment role. However, he grew
up in Darien where his dad,
George Moxley, served on the
city council.
“I thought it would be some
thing interesting to do,” Greg
stated and pointed out that his
dad enjoyed the council posi
tion. “I bring a willingness to
learn.”
Greg is employed as a direc
tor/operator at Plant Vogtle. He
has lived in Girard for more
than 20 years. He and his wife,
Lisa, have one grown son,
Greg Jr. He has worked for
Southern Company since 1986.
He enjoys fishing and working
outdoors in his spare time and
likes to work on old cars.
As far the city goes, Greg
said he likes the small- town
feel. He said he would like to
see some of the old buildings
in Girard “cleaned up.” He also
believes the Girard Mall and
the fire station are community
assets.
Next month will be his first
city council meeting

The local Georgia Depart
ment of Veteran services of
fice offers veterans and their
families a host of entitlements.
“Our mission is to serve
the veterans of Burke and Jef
ferson Counties,” said Carol
Crawford, field office manager.
The agency addresses the
needs of the veterans and their
survivors and dependents in
regard to benefits for which
they may be entitled. The list
of benefits available to local
veterans is comprehensive.
“Compensation is a benefit
that covers if a veteran suffered
an injury or an illness that is
related to military service,”
Crawford said and pointed out
that ineligible veterans may
still meets the requirements
of a pension. It is based on
income as long as the veteran
served at least one day during
a war-time period.
Veterans may also find as
sistance with daily living skills
through the local office. In ad
dition to monetary relief, there
are medical benefits that can be
obtained through the VA Medi
cal Center. The local office can
also assist with nursing home
placement.
“There are also educational
benefits that a veteran may
be eligible for,” Crawford
said. “There
