a time when COVID-19 vac
cines were still unavailable
and Georgians remained wary
of getting out and spending
money.

lections were up 26.9% last
month, driven by a huge in
crease of 106.1% in tax return

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Editor:
I attended the “Battle of the
Bands” for the first time on
November 7, 2021 at Butler
High School. I was highly
impressed with the Burke
County High School Band’s
performance. I am extremely
proud of the Pride of Burke
County High School March
ing Band. To all our students:
Awesome job! Your Vice May
or commends you! I ask that
the Burke County community
continue to support the band.

Editor:
I would like to take this op
portunity to remind our com
munity that November 11th is
Veterans Day.
In our fast times and then the
pandemic, we often forget to
stop and pause to say "Thank
You" to the very people we
owe our freedom to—our Vet
erans. They come in all shapes
and sizes, short and tall, fat
and skinny, male and female,
black and white. But they all
are united by a common thread-
-they gave of their lives so
that we could have ours. They
might have fussed but they
went. They did their duty. Each
of them are heroes.
Some came back changed,
some came back wounded,
some came back in boxes,
some were never found. And
if they had to go again, they
would. And now, we owe
them—our respect and devo
tion.

The True Citizen recently
published this year's and the
preceding five year tax levy
for the Board of Education and
the Board of Commissioners.
There is important information
in these charts that goes mostly
unnoticed. The information
shows that during the six year
period the tax digest value
increased from $3.45 billion to
$6.59 billion according to the
Board of Education's report
ing . This hefty increase reflects
the effect of Plant Vogtle’s
units three and four addition
to the utility digest which will
be short lived.
When units three and four
are activated the property di
gest will once again begin an
irreversible plummet due to
their depreciation. If history
repeats itself the digest will
fall to about 50% of its cur
rent value which will have to
be made up by increasing the
millage rate to continue financ
ing the two bloated systems of
government at current levels.
The depreciation of Vogtle’s
units one and two coupled
with excessive spending by
these boards previously led to
a doubling of property taxes
over a twenty year period in
Burke County.
The chart also shows the
amount of revenue that these
payments.
Net sales tax receipts rose by
a much more modest 13.9%,
with corporate income taxes
up 81.2% as payments far out
stripped tax refunds.
With Georgians continuing
to do more driving as the coro-
navirus threat wanes, motor
fuel tax collections in October
were up 9% over the same
month last year.
The itch to travel more after
being pent up by COVID-19
also paid off in hotel/motel tax
receipts, which rose 52.6% in
Georgia in October compared
to October 2020.

■■ CROSSWORD ■■
So, take a moment on, not
only that day, but every day,
to fly your American Flag for
our country, and show your
gratitude and respect to them,
and to our Flag. Except for
these Veterans, we would not
be able to say,
" We ARE this United States
of America and We ARE Proud
of it!!".
Thank you Veterans. I salute
you!

boards have taken in year after
year during this six year period
which is eye opening. The rev
enue collected by the School
Board has nearly doubled and
the Board of Commissioners is
not far behind in their percent
age of increased revenue. Nei
ther board has seen fit to give
property owners a significant
millage rate reduction. They
just keep taking in the extra
cash which begs the question
of what they are doing with all
this additional money. Maybe
they will say they are saving it
for a rainy day.
