Rolene Rowell intended to
remain in her position as director
of the Burke
County Recreation Department
until she was 65, marking the
40th year of employment at the
agency entity. Sometimes, how
ever, things don’t go as planned.
Rowell recently announced
her retirement after 37 years of
service. She intends to assist her
35-year-old son, Dustin, grow the
business he began approximately
five years ago.
“His business has reached a
point where either he is going
to have to cut back or he is go
ing to have to grow,” she said of
Rowell’s Heating and Air. “I will
be overseeing the administration
part of it, so he can take care of
the heating and air side. I am so
tickled to be able to work with
him every single day. That is just
like a dream come true.”
Tears well up in Rowell’s eyes
as she recalls the amazing story
of how the universe steered her
in the direction of her son. She
often witnessed him tending to
business during family time.
“It hurts my heart so badly to
see him needing someone to help
take that from him,” she said. “I
can be the one to do it.”
Like most women, Rowell
would do things for her son that
she wouldn’t do for other reasons.
She admits that being able to
work with him is the only thing
that could take her away from the
work she has loved for almost
four decades.
After high school, Rowell
earned her bachelor’s degree in
recreation from Georgia South
ern. She was hired at the age of
24 to bring in programming at
the recreation department where
her dad, J.L Glisson, worked as
a coach. It was an opportunity
for her to join an organization
that allowed her to grow, while
giving her the freedom to reach
her full potential. It was a match
made in heaven; she landed in the
industry for which she possessed
raw passion, based in the county
where she wanted to live.
She laughs as she admits that,
along the way, she learned it
wasn’t all a bed of roses. But she
set her sights high and worked
toward providing recreational
activities for people with a mul
titude of interests.
“I love watching families come
together and I love
providing activi
ties for a variety of
people,” she said.
