Bridging Gaps in local history

Throughout Burke County a
number of bridges and roads
stand as monuments, honor
ing the legacies of those who
played a significant role in
the county’s history. Many lo
cal citizens and visitors to the
county pass over those bridges
and highways every day with
out knowing the significance
of those being h onored. Hope
fully, a short series of stories
will enlighten those who may
have wondered who they were.
A bridge that crosses Rocky
Creek on Highway 56 South,
reminds us of another local
leader. The bridge dedication
was made possible by a reso
lution passed by the General
Assembly and signed by Gov.
Sonny Perdue in May 2009, to
honor Ray DeLaigle’s work
as chair of the Burke County
Board of Commissioners for
20 years and longtime service
to the community.
DeLaigle was a retired farm
er when he died in 2005.
During his service in World
War II, he was awarded three
Bronze Star Medals, a Good
Conduct Medal, WW II Vic
tory Medal and the Army Oc
cupation Medal. He served as
a tank commander in the U.S.
Army in Rhineland and Central
Europe.
DeLaigle was Chairman of
the Burke County Board of
Commissioners from 1972 to
1992, a member of the Indus
trial Development Authority
and a member of the CSRA
Regional Development Com
mission.
He was a member of the Ma
sonic Lodge 274, Alee Temple
where he was a Past Master. He
was a past Post Commander of
American Legion Post 120, a
Deputy Sheriff for the Burke
County Sheriffs Department,
and a Deputy Game Warden
for the State of Georgia and
Burke County. He also worked
as a contractor for the Georgia
Ray DeLaigle
Power Company.
When the bridge over Rocky
Creek wad dedicated, former
County Administrator Billy
Hopper noted that the water
way was one of DeLaigle’s
favorite fishing spots.
DeLaigle was born in 1926
and is buried at Magnolia
Cemetery.
