From Staff Reports
Waynesboro is kicking off
the holidays this Sunday with
one of the community’s favor
ite shopping days - Downtown
Open House, and other events
will follow as the Christmas
season draws near.
The Annual Downtown
Open House, which is spon
sored by the Waynesboro
Downtown Development Au
thority (DDA) and the Burke
County Chamber of Com
merce, is Sunday, Nov. 21,
from 1-5 p.m. Downtown
shops will be open with sales,
deals and specials. According
to DDA Director Don Lively,
the first 100 shoppers who get a
designated number of punches
on the punch-card provided by
the DDA will receive a free
giveaway when they present
the card at the DDA table.
DDA is also bringing some
thing new to the annual Christ
mas on Liberty Square hosted
by the Downtown Organiza
tion of Retailers. In addition to
all the special crafts, food and
fun, DDA will sponsor the first
ever laser show anywhere in
the CSRA. “The event will cul
minate Christmas on Liberty
and promises to be spectacu
lar with lasers lighting up the
sky of the downtown,” Lively
said, adding that the show will
begin at approximately 8 p.m.
Donations for the event are still
being collected.
And don’t forget DDA’s
Christmas parade and visit
from everyone’s favorite elf,
scheduled for Saturday, Dec.
11, at 1 p.m.
Lively said this year’s theme
will be "The Music of Christ
mas ." Local schools, churches,
businesses and civic groups are
encouraged to participate with
floats, marching groups, riding
groups or dancing groups. Ap
plications and rules are posted
on the City of Waynesboro
website and are also available
by calling 706-554-8018 or
by emailing donlively.dda®
gmail.com. The rainout date
for the event will be Saturday,
Dec.18.
Contact Lively for any infor
mation regarding these three
events.

The Waynesboro City Coun
cil voted to appoint Rob White
to the Historic Preservation
Commission Monday. The
HPC has five voting commis
sioners and two ex officio com
missioners who do not vote.
Ex officio members are not re
quired to live in the county and
as long as they have something
to “contribute,” according to
Director Don Lively. White
will fill the role of one of the
two advisory positions.
“Rob is a contractor in the
district,” said Lively. “He
knows the signage codes and
signage turns out to be about a
third of what we do. He knows
how to go through a certificate
of appropriateness (COA). He
has done it numerous times.”
White replaces John High-
smith.
In other news, a couple of
new businesses will call the
downtown area home. An
antique store is coming to 713
North Liberty in the near fu
ture and it is rumored that 727
Shadrack Street will soon host
a liquor store.
Lively also reported that the
First National Bank is rebuild
ing its Myrick Street drive
through facility.
The next HPC meeting is
tentatively scheduled for De
cember 14 at 6 p.m.
