Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, November 18,
2021. She was bom on October
1,1925 in Carroll County, Geor
gia, to the late Thomas Walter
and Belle Hyatt Smith. Dorma
moved to Waynesboro with her
family in 1936, and graduated
from Waynesboro High School

younger siblings.
During her time at CEI she
met the love of her life, Frank
Long Perry, and the two were married on June 27, 1944

marriage Frank and Dorma lived in Michigan where Frank
attended Seminary and preached. In 1948, they returned to
Georgia where Frank joined the South Georgia Conference
of the United Methodist Church. During their 65 years of
faithfully serving the Lord, while Frank preached, Dorma,

retiring to Waynesboro, Frank and Dorma, along with Reg
gie and Loutrelle Edenheld, and Bruce and Carolyn Wilson,
founded the Eagles, an organization for the retired pastors of
the South Georgia Conference.
Dorma took great pleasure in cooking and entertaining, not
only for her family, but also for the members of the Eagles. In
addition to her service in local churches, Dorma also served
as a public school librarian for 25 years, after obtaining her
degree from Georgia Women’s College. Dorma became a
dedicated Christian at the age of nine, while attending a

came pregnant found itself in a school library today, there likely
would be a public furor. Parents might send letters and make
personal visits to the school board. Politicians seeking to gain
an advantage would likely join the protest and call upon the
state legislature to ban the book or even to bum it. The call for
public decency would echo through the community, state, and
even nation. The author would be pilloried, made a mockery,
and possibly forced into hiding. This outrage, however, would
likely end when it was discovered that the story came from the
Bible, Genesis 19: 33-36. Who among those protesters would
say that the Bible should be removed from library shelves?
The banning of books is not the path to understanding. Insight
ful discussions with teachers, librarians, and young people should
be a part of the thought process in gaining a fuller discernment and
greater wisdom. We always should be patient with others in love.

to when the food would arrive. Five days before Thanksgiving, I
was worried. A call to Williams Sonoma, after a 30-minute wait,
assured me it would all arrive in time.
Another call on Tuesday.
Four calls on Wednesday.
“It’s en route,” a supervisor assured me. “It will arrive by end
of the day. I promise.”
At 6 p.m., with no deliveries made, I headed to the grocery
store. I cooked until 11 p.m. that night. The Williams Sonoma
orders never arrived.
On Thanksgiving Day, I made my normal call to my dear
friend Walt Ehmer, President of Waffle House, who spends the
day cleaning tables and washing dishes at various WHs. I told
him of my upset.
“Why,” he asked, “did you not call me? Waffle House is known
for our pies. We could have fixed you right up.”
That’s the call I plan to make this year.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Editor:
While reading last week’s edition of The True Citizen, I was
drawn with curiosity to an article on the front page of your
newspaper. It was an article referencing the arrest of Augusta
resident Ossawa Jones. One of nine men arrested on a federal
indictment. What made me curious was that this story had already
been reported by your newspaper on November 3rd. However,
as I begin to read the story, my curiosity quickly turned to anger
and disgust at what I believe is our newspaper’s intentional and
deliberate attempt to cast a negative light on our Vice Mayor Mr.
James “Chick” Jones. One only needs to read the story to see how
I came to this assumption. The headline of the story points out
that one of the defendants, in a case where NINE people were
arrested, is the son of Vice Mayor Jones. But the story begins
by recapping the legal issues of the current suspended mayor.
Issues that Mr. Jones has no involvement with or relation to
whatsoever. Not only that, the story goes so far as to report in
depth and specihc issues the current suspended mayor has with
his former attorney as well as the fact that he is still collecting his
salary from the City of Waynesboro. Mr. Jones has nothing to do
with that so why is it mentioned in this story? Your newspaper
has reported time and time again on the issues that the current
suspended mayor is facing in great detail. Again, I ask how do
these issues relate to the context of this story?
While I disagree, your newspaper obviously believes that it
is newsworthy and in the interest of the public for you to report
about the arrest of the 44-year-old son of our Vice Mayor who
according to your story does not even reside in Burke County. If
that is the case, stick to that please! Stories like this are what one
would expect to hnd in a supermarket tabloid, not the journalistic
excellence we expect from our local newspaper.
In my opinion, Mr. Jones has done a line job representing this
city and, in your words, “stepping up to the plate” in The Mayor’s
absence. Why can’t we support and celebrate that rather than
trying to hnd everything we can, even if it’s not related, to cast
a negative light on him.
