Elasticity sets the stage
for a great holiday season

Licensed marital and family
therapist Maxwell Kennedy
draws on his personal experi
ences and clientele encounters,
combined with what he calls
the “mythology” of holidays,
when he gives advice on man
aging holiday emotions.
Expectations play a huge
part in why disappointments
occur. Those anticipations can
be formed by childhood experi
ences, frame of references, or
by the media. A preconceived
idea forms in the conscience
that determines what a person
thinks a situation should be.
This could be especially dif
ficult for older people because
society has changed tremen
dously since the Baby Boomers
were young.
“We have to examine the
variation in the way that people
think about holidays because
of the chronology of when
they were bom,” he said and
compares someone born in
1948 to someone born in 2006.
There is a gap that exists when
it comes to values and views.
“There may be an expectation
that is not quite realistic.”
The gap must be reconciled
or disappointment will oc
cur. People should strive to
consider not just themselves,
but also the other generations
involved. Holidays are a mixed
bag of emotions and feelings,
influenced by variables that
people carry within them
selves. Like anything else in
life success is determined by
way of response.
The knowledge that he
shares can be generally applied
to familial relationships.
“When we are unable to be
flexible and adaptable in any
given situation in life, holiday
or non-holiday, then that is
probably going to influence
our mental status,” he said.
“When there is a gap between
the expectation and the reality
of what occurs, then there is
likely to be disappointment.”
Disappointment can manifest
as anger, depression, anxiety or
the desire to control things.
“If we are more mindful
that there are many influences,
then that may help us begin to
be more realistic and flexible
about what is going to happen,”
he said. Inflexibility often
manifests as emotional di
lemma. “All of us need to have
some elasticity about us. Lack
of elasticity and flexibility will
cause us to break. If we are
rigid about something then we
don’t have much tolerance.”
When someone determines
that something should only be
the way they think it should
be, and believes it is the only
way that is acceptable, then
they set themselves up. At 75
years of age, Kennedy himself
admits that he must go through
developmental adjustments.
“That is just normal, but
many people don’t know that,”
he said. “I know that I have to
think about things.”
Particularly, Baby Boom
ers might have to exert more
effort toward flexibility since
society has become more mo
bile. Value systems have also
changed. Becoming set in one’s
ways is not a positive act. Ken
nedy admits that he learned
throughout his life that it is
more productive to be flexible.
In life, change is inevitable.
“If a person lives in a nar
row frame, they may develop
some narrow ways of think
ing,” he said. “That doesn’t
mean they are bad people; it
just means that they have not
had an experience that made
them think outside that box.
They developed a way of be
lieving the way things should
be. Maybe for years, they have
been able to be that way, but at
some point, there is likely to be
a departure.”
Making the best of holidays,
or any situation that doesn’t
quite meet expectations, in
volves compromise. Lor holi
days, that might mean cre
atively coming up with a way
to gather that is realistic for
everyone involved. COVID-19
created more need for compro
mise as people struggled with
isolation and whether to be
vaccinated.
“If people are able to dia
logue and collaborate, they
may be able to work out a
win-win for everybody,” he
said. “They recognize reality
and then they work within the
context of reality.”
Kennedy offers a full range
of mental health services at
Wimberly House Ministries,
including addressing depres
sion, anxiety, parent-child
problems, academic issues,
behavioral issues, substance
abuse and couples counseling.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Editor:
It’s in the record books, we
did it! The first ever Christmas
Laser Light Show in Burke
County is history! There are a
lot of people to thank for mak
ing this event happen, so let
us begin. Lirst, I want to thank
my bride of 37+ years, for two
months all she heard was laser
show, laser show, laser show.
Thank you for putting up with
that. Then we have that intrepid
band of Waynesboro Warriors
your Downtown Development
Authority, headed up by our
executive director Don Lively.
These citizens; Lindsai Gentry,
Elizabeth Highsmith, Jenna
Maddox, Bill Tinley, Cory
Cooper, Nan Palmer Lynch,
and Linsdey Keller all work
very hard to promote the down
town corridor and give unself
ishly of their time and talents.
Shout outs are also due for
all the retail shops and eateries
and vendors that participated
in making this event a success.
Thanks to Chief Burley and
Sheriff Williams and their offi
cers for their presence that eve
ning, I know it made all in at
tendance feel safer. D.O.O.R.:
Thank you for allowing us to
tag on to another great Christ
mas on Liberty event. Kudos
to The True Citizen and Soul
Mine for the free advertising
and Joe Jeselnik of JD Produc
tions for providing the music.
Thanks also to Mayor Chick
Jones, Councilmen Dick Byne
and Bill Tinley for supporting
our efforts with your presence.
Of course none of this would
have been possible without the
generosity of individuals and
businesses who, when asked,
gave without hesitation to fund
the light show. We managed
to raise over $7,500 to bring
the laser show to downtown
Liberty Street. Lor a complete
list of those who graciously
gave please go to our DDA
facebook page, downtown
waynesboro ,ga.
None of this, absolutely none
of this would have mattered
one iota had not you, the people
of Burke County, come out to
support our efforts. Thanks to
you Christmas on Liberty and
the Laser Light Show garnered
one of the largest downtown
gatherings in recent memory!
Thank you all who made this
happen and to all those who
came, Merry Christmas!
