Following in her mother’s footsteps

Sgt. Lillie Tolbert of the
Waynesboro Police Depart
ment could not be prouder of
her daughter Latara Wilker-
son’s recent graduation from
firefighter/EMT training.
Wilkerson decided she want
ed a more challenging job that
offered more security.
“I wanted to make my family
proud of me,” she said. “My
mom is a strong woman and
that makes me a strong woman
also.”
Wilkerson admits that sees
her mother as a role model
and often mimics her choices.
In 2002, Tolbert bought a gun,
a couple years later Wilker
son did the same. They have
the same furniture. Tolbert
recently purchased an Infin
ity 250 and shortly thereafter,
Wilkerson purchased the same
automobile.
“She has good taste in every
thing,” Wilkerson remarked.
A single mother of three
boys, Wilkerson decided to
make the career change, much
to her mother’s surprise, af
ter working at Electrolux for
nearly 10 years. She told her
mom she intended to take
the test and later expressed
anxiety over the difficulty of
it. She worried that she might
not pass. Tolbert advised her
daughter not to let failure deter
her. Tolbert herself completed
her internship in 2004 at the
WPD. Afterward, she attended
the academy in Savannah but
failed the shooting part of the
program. Still, she never gave
up and eventually achieved a
position in law enforcement.
Now she is a sergeant in the
Community Service Division.
As it turned out, Wilkerson also
failed the Candidate Physical
Ability Test (CPAT) test on her
first try. Her mother told her
not to give up. After working
out for a while, she attempted
it again and passed.
“Whatever it is, she doesn’t
back down from anything,”
Wilkerson said of her mom. “I
don’t let anything defeat me.”
Both women work in male
dominated industries. Wilker
son said it is somewhat scary
but she doesn’t want to be seen
as a “ weak link.’’She knows
she has to show her strengths.
Tolbert attended her daughter’s
graduation in uniform. Wilk
erson said standing next to her
mom in her uniform made her
feel proud that they were both
empowered women. In both
cases, they were the only fe
males in the graduating classes.
“I explained to her that we
are both in fields that are domi
nated by men, sometimes its
going to be a challenge but if
you work hard and stay focused
then you will succeed,” Tolbert
said.
Named to Dean’s List
Claudia Amelia Eastmead, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay East-
mead of Waynesboro, qualified for the Dean’s List at Brewton-
Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga. for the fall 2021 semester,
announced Dr. Robert Brian, Vice President for Academic Ser
vices. Qualifying students were enrolled in 12 or more hours and
earned a grade point average of 3.6 or better.
Sgt. Lillie Tolbert stands with her daughter Latara Wilkerson
December 15 at Julian Smith Casino.
The two women may have
more in common then they
realize. When asked to describe
one another, while in separate
rooms, their answers were the
same.
“She is a go- getter,” both
women said of the other.
Although Wilkerson resides
Sardis Christmas in the Air
Burke County is likely to see
an increase in COVID-19 cases
in the near future.
The Georgia Department
of Public Health reported 16
new COVID-19 cases during
the 2-week prior to Monday,
December 20. The percentage
of local residents who have re
ceived at least one dose of the
vaccine has increased slightly
to 53%, while the percent of
fully vaccinated residents re-

Drenching night sweats may
distinguish the Omicron vari
ant from the common cold,
according to a December 20
article in the New York Post.
The night sweats are reported
to be severe enough to require a
change of clothes in the middle
of the night. Other symptoms
of Omicron include a scratchy
throat, dry cough, fatigue and
mild muscle aches.
Continued from front
25 in the area of the accident
for a period of time.
The crash is under investiga
tion by the Georgia State Patrol
and no further information was

and works in Augusta, that may
change in the future.
“I say I wouldn’t mind be
cause my family is here,”
Wilkerson said and pointed out
that a move to Burke County
would require an advanced
EMT certification. “When they
offer it, I am going to apply.”

Omicron expected to spread quickly
