Senior Reactor Operator loses license
WHAT’S NEXT?

The Nuclear Regulatory
Commission has issued a No
tice of Violation after an in
vestigation found that a senior
reactor operator (SRO) work
ing at Plant Vogtle Units 1 & 2
failed to report a change in his
prescribed medication.
The Notice of Violation ad
dressed to Michael Giles states
that an investigation completed
March 1,2021, found Giles in
violation of “deliberate mis
conduct.”
During the period of June
19,2015 through May 5,2020,
Giles, at the time a licensed
senior reactor operator, caused
the facility licensee to be in
violation of regulation that
requires completeness and
accuracy of information, by
failing to report the prescribed
medications and doses he was
taking.
“The information is material
to the NRC because it directly
influences the NRC’s licensing
decisions concerning medical
qualification conditions im
posed on the senior operator’s
license,” the notice of violation
states.
Giles did not contest the
violation.
In a Jan. 4 letter addressed
to Giles, NRC Regional Ad
ministrator Laura Dudes stated
that the NRC considers viola
tions involving the submittal
of incomplete and inaccurate
information to a licensee or
the NRC that could impede or
otherwise impact the NRC’s
review of the medical status of
an SRO, to be significant.
In determining the appro
priate sanction to be issued,

of a firearm by a convicted
felon and possession of a fire
arm during the commission of
a Crime.
Kenneth Eason, who also
suffered minor injuries, has not

the NRC considered issuing
an order prohibiting Giles
from involvement in NRC-
licensed activities. However,
since Giles took responsibility
for the violation and no longer
possesses a SRO license, the
federal agency opted to issue
a Notice of Violation in lieu of
an order.
“You should be aware that
if you are involved in NRC-
licensed activities in the future,
additional deliberate violations
could result in more significant
enforcement action or criminal
penalties,” the letter states.
