Life Lines
By Linda Lariscey
WHAT ARE YOU EXPECTING?
"BEHOLD, IAMLAYING INZION
A CHOSEN STONE, A PRECIOUS
(honored) CORNERSTONE, AND HE
WHO BELIEVES IN HIM [whoever
adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him]
WILL NEVER BE DISAPPOINTED
[in his expectations].
1 Peter 2:6 (AMP)
Living by faith is an adventure. Not everybody wants to ride
the roller coasters of life, but some do. They embrace the
high and lows, twists, and turns, assured they will reach
their destination. The exhilaration of having an expectant
faith shuts your eye to logic as you hold on to dear life.
The One you cling to is Life, and His name is Jesus. When
you’re going down and yet you look up, He is there. You
can laugh and trust that better days are ahead.
When your life seems barren, shout for joy! Believe in the
unseen and shake up those devils that deceive you into
giving up! Jesus said to "doubting Thomas," "How blessed
are those who do not see but trust anyway!"
Expectancy is the flame of hope that keeps the fire of faith
smoldering when all you can see is ashes. Jesus is the
Christ in you, the hope of glory. He is the cornerstone of
your faith. Look to Him, rely on him, hold on, and He will
not disappoint you. He will bring you to an expected end!

franchise to African American men. While
women in various states were granted the right
to vote, it was not until 1920 that women were
guaranteed the right to vote by the Nineteenth
Amendment to the United States Constitution.
While the 19th Amendment gave white women
the vote, black women were not included.
In would be nearly another half century for
true democracy to be achieved in the United
States. Many African Americans, especially in
the South, were denied the vote. The nation’s
passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 sought
to protect voter registration and voting for racial
minorities. The act also corrected discrimina
tory election systems and districting. The 1965
act provided the U. S. Justice Department with
the authority to pre-clear state voting laws and
regulations before they went into effect. This
prevented the enactment of laws that disenfran
chised or made it difficult for African Americans
to vote. However, in 2013 the Supreme Court
ruled in the 5-4 Shelby County v. Holder deci
sion that Section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act
was unconstitutional. States and local govern
ments that wanted to change their voting laws
no longer had to receive the approval of the
Attorney General. This one decision opened
the floodgates to laws specifically aimed at re
ducing the participation of African Americans
and others.
In 2020, there was a record-breaking voter
turnout with roughly two in every three eligible
voters casting ballots. This fact triggered 19
states to pass 34 laws restricting voter participa
tion with similar and more limiting bills held in
abeyance. It seems that some Americans cannot
accept a broad and diverse democracy when it
includes significant black participation.
We can never forget democracy is fragile and
requires courage to embrace a future without
fear or flinching.

waste nothing.)
To my joy, these lessons of Mama’s were
magnified by the Home Economist of our Elec
tric Membership Corporation, the wise woman
who oversaw home economics for the county
extension agency, three incredible Home Ec
teachers, 4-H and FHA (Future Homemakers
of America) clubs.
All these women beamed with happiness as
they explained gardening, canning, how to put
in a concealed zipper, custom sizing a pattern,
and knitting a sweater.
Mrs. Jean Trotter, Mrs. Gloria Ray, and Mrs.
Lydia Daniels Park were instrumental in my
learning. Mrs. Ray sparkled with delight as she
taught us how to fold a fitted sheet by tucking
the comers together. I think of her every time
I wash linens.
My grandmother taught me to crochet but
Mrs. Trotter taught me the more complicated
art of knitting while Mrs. Park, always laugh
ing, introduced me to cooking foods other than
Southern cuisine.
All three women are still investing in me by
supporting my projects and cheering me on.
Even dearer to my heart is that they all knew,
and loved, Mama. Once, while in high school,
we had two student teachers from the University
of Georgia. As the time neared for their return to
Athens, Mama cooked a big Southern country
meal and hosted all of these dear teachers.
Now, when Mama cooked to impress, it was,
indeed, impressive. Fried chicken, roast beef,
huge platters of vegetables, a pie, and a cake.
One of the young teachers, whose name was
Arilla, wrote Mama a beautiful thank you note
and used the occasion to teach our class the
importance of writing “bread and butter” notes.
“Whenever anyone hosts you in their home,
you must write a thank you note.”
This is my bread and butter note to these won
derful women. Thank you very much.
