Lady Spartans wrap up regular
season with two wins, one loss
EB A’s Lady Spartans headed
into the first round of the region
tourney yesterday (Tuesday)
after a 14-6, 6-4 season. They
ended regular season play with
wins against Thomas Jeffer
son Academy and Monsignor
Donovan and a loss to Augusta
Prep.
Head coach Daniel Hannah
said the girls came out aggres
sive on defense without fouling
in their 67-29 win over TJA.
“Zaylie Baker continued her
tremendous defensive play,
and that turned into a lot of
easy baskets for us,” he added.
“Bessie Harper had a career
high in both scoring and steals.
It was good for us to be able to
get so many of our girls good
playing time.”
Baker racked up 18 points
and 7 steals, and Harper had
12 points and 5 steals. Kelsey
Jaquess and Addison Riggs
both had 5 rebounds each.
On Jan. 29, the girls sealed
another victory, this time with
a 42-28 win against Mon Don.
“We were able to play upt
empo and use our defense to
create offensive opportunities,”
Hannah said. “I was proud of
the way that Leila Eastmead hit
the boards and with how well-
balanced our scoring was from
this game. Braelyn Reeves hit
some big shots early to get us a
lead, and we were able to hold
onto it throughout the game.”
Eastmead pulled down 15
rebounds on the night and had
4 steals. Reeves had 8 points
and 8 rebounds.
August Prep pulled just
ahead of EBA’s girls on Feb.
1, earning a 38-34 victory.
“We played much better
defensively in the second half
but made mistakes in key situ
ations and gave up too many
offensive rebounds in the first
half to be able to pull out the
W,” Hannah said. “I was proud
of the effort given by our young
team.”
Leading the effort were
Baker, who has 11 points,
including 3 three-pointers, 4 re
bounds and 3 steals; Eastmead,
7 points, 5 rebounds and 3
steals; and Reeves, 8 rebounds
and 4 points.
The Lady Spartans played
Augusta Prep again in the first
round of the region tournament
on Tuesday, but results were
not available at press time.
