ATV chase reaches 90 mph
ROY F. CHALKER JR.

A 37 year-old man was ar
rested after the pursuit of an all
terrain vehicle (ATV) reached
a speed of 90 mph on Feb. 3.
On that date at about 3:15
p.m., Burke county Deputy
Michael Murphy observed an
orange ATV travelling east on
Highway 24 W.
When the deputy attempted
to warn the driver to stay off the
paved highway, the driver of
the 2017 Yamaha Raptor made
several attempts to evade the
officer at a high rate of speed
on Rocky Creek Church Road.
After leading the deputy
through several U-turns,
Franklin Greene, Jr. stopped
near his residence at 107 Rocky
Creek Church Road.
Greene was taken into cus
tody and charged with fleeing
or attempting to elude a police
officer and reckless driving.

This is part 4 of a 4- part
series examining the need
for county services in Burke
County’s outlying cities. Local
government authorities were
asked to define their city's re
lationship with the county gor-
ernment and to express their
thoughts on how the county can
better service them.
County officials in Midville
do not have much to say about
the city’s relationship with
the county. Mayor Pro Tern
Jack McFendon, declined an
interview. Councilwoman Joan
Hall issued the following state
ment on behalf of herself and
Councilwoman Norma Thome.
“We really only have two
issues at this time.. .the county
commissioners have voiced
the possibility of removing
the dumpsters from town. We
really would prefer this contin
ues as usual. At times, the city
has issues with stray dogs and
cats. It would be very helpful
if the county animal control
could assist the city in reducing
homeless animals.”
Girard had even less to say.
Mayor William Cox declined a
request for an interview.
