Bears clinches lead in
8th inning to defeat ECI
The BCHS Varsity baseball
team took the lead late in the
game in an 11-3 victory over
Emanuel County Institute on
Wednesday. The game was
tied at three with the Bears
batting in the top of the eighth
when Phillip Hodges singled
on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.
Burke County secured the
victory thanks to eight runs
in the eighth inning. Hodges,
Jahkari Howard, Marshall
Flowers, Myles Heatwole,
and Brice Marchman each had
RBIs in the big inning.
Emanuel County Institute
bred up the offense in the first
inning. Jack Walden drove in
one when Walden doubled.
In the top of the seventh in
ning, the Bears tied things up
at three. Howard drew a walk,
scoring one run.
Howard was the winning
pitcher for the Bears. The “fire-
baller” went two and a third
innings, allowing zero runs on
zero hits, striking out six and
walking one.
Joseph Stewart toed the rub
ber for ECI. The hurler allowed
four hits and zero runs over five
innings, striking out two and
walking one. Charlie Rehburg,
Gabe Lee, and Kanyon Thomp
son each contributed in relief
for Emanuel County Institute.
Flowers started the game
for Burke County. The pitcher
lasted five and two-thirds in
nings, allowing five hits and
three runs while striking out
nine
The Bears tallied 13 hits.
Marchman, Howard, Hodges,
and Heatwole all collected
multiple hits. Marchman went
3-for-5 at the plate to lead in
hits.
ECI collected five hits on the
day. Bryce Kearson and Reh
burg all managed multiple hits.
Head Coach Billy Marchman
said it was a “solid win, espe
cially given that with one out
into the 7th inning and down by
3 runs with no runners on base
we rallied to push the game
into extra innings. Then our
offense steamrolled them in
the 8th. Pitching and catching
was outstanding throughout the
eight innings by our staff.

BCHS takes late lead
to defeat SE Bulloch
The BCHS Bears varsity
baseball team snatched the
lead late in the game in a 3-1
victory over Southeast Bulloch
on Friday. The game was tied
at one-one with Burke County
batting in the top of the sixth
when Myles Heatwole singled
on a 0-2 count, scoring one run.
The pitching was strong on
both sides. The Bears’ pitchers
struck out five, while Southeast
Bulloch pitchers sat down ten.
Southeast Bulloch knotted
the game up at one in the bot
tom of the fifth inning, when
an error scored one run for
Southeast Bulloch.
Phillip Hodges earned the
win for Burke County. The
pitcher went six and a third
innings, allowing one run on
three hits, striking out four and
walking one. Jahkari Howard
threw two-thirds of an inning
in relief out of the bullpen, and
recorded the last two outs to
earn the save for Burke County.
Turner took the loss for
Southeast Bulloch. The pitcher
surrendered three runs on three
hits over five and a third in
nings while striking out seven.
Brice Marchman led the
Bears with two hits in three
at bats.
Bowman went 2-for-3 at the
plate to lead Southeast Bulloch
in hits.
Head baseball coach Billy
Marchman said, “We have
opened the season with two
home game wins, two away
game wins, and one overnight
weekend road trip picking
up two wins to help us better
prepare for region play. I am
very proud of my guys and the
continued focus they have in
order to get better each time we
are around each other. I hope
that we can continue improv
ing our craft and stay healthy
as we open up region play this
Tuesday, March 1st at home
at 5:30 p.m. vs. Cross Creek.”

Local man on historic flight
Wayne Scott of Burke County was a member of the first all-Black C-130 Hercules flight crew for
the 165th Airlift Wing, GeorgiaAir Nation Guard, flew to "Accelerating the Legacy’ Event at Joint
Base Charleston for a two day event Feb. 18-19,2022. The event was to honor the legacy of the
heroic Tuskegee Airmen by honoring the past, developing the present and promoting the future.
To commemorate Black History Month, these five Airmen flew to the event as the first all-black
crew out of the Savannah Air National Guard base. The crew members were Col. Sheldon
Wilson (pilot), Capt. Thessa Washington (pilot), Capt. Ranon Barber (navigator), Master Sgt.
Wayne Scott (flight engineer) and Senior Airman Christopher Wade (loadmaster). Another one of
the highlights of the event was the opportunity to meet with one of the last living documented
original Tuskegee Airmen, Dr. Eugene Richardson.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO REQUEST RELEASE OF FUNDS

These notices shall satisfy two separate but related procedural requirements for activities to be
undertaken by the City of Waynesboro.
REQUEST FOR RELEASE OF FUNDS
On or about March 18, 2022, the City of Waynesboro will submit a request to the Department of
Community Affairs (DCA) for the release of FY 2022 Community Development Block Grant funds under
Title I of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, as amended, to undertake a project
known as FY 2022 CDBG "Boro Complex" to be located on properties fronting 7 th Street and Nesbitt Street
for the purpose of property acquisition, design, and construction of the "Boro Complex" and the
operation thereof at a cost of approximately $1,550,000 to include $1,000,000 CDBG funding and
$550,000 City leverage and funding.
FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT
The city of Waynesboro has determined that the project will have no significant impact on the human
environment. Therefore, an Environmental Impact Statement under the National Environmental Policy
Act of 1969 (NEPA) is not required. Additional project information is contained in the Environmental
Review Record (ERR) on file at 615 North Liberty Street, Waynesboro, Georgia 30830 or Armentrout
Matheny Thurmond, P.C. 330 Research Drive, Suite A240, Athens, Georgia 30605 and may be examined
or copied weekdays 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Any individual, group, or agency may submit written comments on the ERR to the City of Waynesboro at
the office of Valerie Kirkland, City Manager. All comments received by March 15, 2022 will be considered
by the City of Waynesboro prior to authorizing submission of a request for release of funds. Comments
should specify which Notice they are addressing.
