BCPS Superintendent
receives leadership award
Every year during Women’s
History Month, the Georgia
Legislature Women’s Caucus
recognizes outstanding women
in Georgia who exemplify the
leadership and inspiration em
bodied by Representative Ran
dall , the first African American
woman to be elected to the
Georgia General Assembly
from Middle Georgia.
Randall held several lead
ership positions within the
government and other profes
sional organizations, includ
ing chair of the Legislative
Women’s Caucus. This year,
Burke County Public Schools
Superintendent Dr. Angela
Williams received the Nikki
T. Randall Servant Leadership
Award.
Women have always been
the backbone of our commu
nities, selflessly giving their
time, talents and attention to
their neighbors and members
of their community in addi
tion to their own families. The
Covid-19 pandemic created an
even greater need for strong
women and women such as
Dr. Angela Williams have
stepped in and accepted that
responsibility, a press release
stated Tuesday.

PUBLIC NOTICE
On January 24 th and 25 th , 2022, the Sardis Wastewater Treatment
Plant (WWTP) experienced a process upset that led to a discharge
of treated effluent with a Biochemical Oxygen Demand exceedance
by more than 50% of the permitted weekly average limit. The
combined average daily discharge flow to Chandlers Branch during
this event was 0.1 MOD.
The WWTP has made process control adjustments to improve the
treatment system and has mitigated this issue.
Stream Monitoring is being performed using the following tests:
pH, DO, Temperature, Fecal Coliform.
If you have any questions concerning this notice, please contact
Leonides Moreno Miranda at (479) 684-7274.

FORGIVING THOSE WHO DRIVE YOU NUTS
While driving recently, I
noticed this sign outside of a
church and had to stop and get
a photo of it. It reminded me
of the ongoing rift in Burke
County.
Last week, I had the privi
lege of speaking to both Coun
ty Manager Merv Waldrop
and Sheriff Alfonzo Williams.
I wish to point out that in my
personal opinion, both men
are intelligent people, well
equipped to handle the roles
in which they are employed.
Every time I converse with
either one of them, I walk away
thinking, “yep, I get it.”
However, never in my life
have I seen a perfect man.
During a recent conver
sation, Williams willingly
agreed to extend an apology to
Waldrop. It takes courage and
strength to apologize to anyone
in any circumstance. I hope
he sees it through. Likewise, I
hope Waldrop accepts his apol
ogy. This could be the first step
toward giving Burke County
citizens what they deserve. We
need county officials who can
work together for the benefit
of the county, despite their
differences.
If Williams and Waldrop can
resolve themselves to make a
new start, maybe the Board of
Commissioners could propel
the forward move by listen
ing to Williams’ concerns in a
work session in the near future.
What if they asked questions
and then contemplated a com
promise?
There is no good guy-bad
guy about this. These are re
lationships that have to work.
Maybe, the answer seems
too simple. However, admit
ting wrongdoing, forgiveness,
communication, thoughtful
consideration and compro
mise are elements of any and
all successful relationships of
any type.

It was suggested that a com
mittee be formed to investigate
how to bring more housing to
the area.
Another key issue identified
by the group is a disengaged
workforce. Many respondents
felt young people as far down
as middle school could begin
training in financial literacy
and job skills to be ready to
enter the workforce prepared,
thus creating a workforce who
will stay in Burke County. A
concern is that the workforce
is not ready and is lacking in
soft skills to attract industries
interested in relocating, ac
cording to the report.
The completion of con
struction on Plant Vogtle’s
Units 3 & 4 is a concern that
spans housing, workforce,
education and infrastructure.
Respondents are concerned the
school system may falter once
the construction ends, housing
issues may never be resolved,
and that the current workforce
will leave for more industry
rich places, the report states.
In addition to the three most
critical themes, participants
discussed a lack of broadband,
the need for more youth lead
ership opportunities and ac
tivities, the need for additional
entertainment options, grocery
stores beyond Wal-Mart and a
lack of a leadership pipeline for
younger people to begin taking
over government positions.
Continued from front
The next step, according to
Archway Professional Aaron
Redman, is working with the
Executive Committee to create
work groups that tackle the is
sue of workforce development,
housing, intergovernmental
collaboration and communica
tions/broadband.
“Issue work groups will con
sist of local stakeholders who
have experience in the respec
tive priority topics,” he said.
“They will meet to discuss
these needs and collaborate on
potential opportunities to ad
dress these issues. No meetings
have been set yet, but we’re
looking at later in April for our
first meetings.”
