Fr. Larry Jesion
It is that time of year again in
which many Christians prepare
to observe the liturgical season
of Lent. This year Lent began
on Wednesday, March 2nd or
Ash Wednesday.
Why Ashes? During an
Ash Wednesday service, the
member of clergy impos
ing the ashes typically says,
“Remember that you are dust
and to dust you shall return.”
as the ashes are placed on the
forehead in the form of a cross.
The ashes serve as a sym
bol of our creation; Genesis
2:7, “...(T)hen the Lord God
formed man from the dust of
the ground and breathed into
his nostrils the breath of life;
and the man became a living
being.” The ashes also serve
as a reminder of humility in
that without God, without His
life-giving Spirit, we are noth
ing. The ashes announce to the
world that we are believers in
God, and that we acknowledge
our role in His creation.
The ashes used are tradi
tionally created by burning
palm fronds and woven palm
crosses from the prior year’s
Palm Sunday. The ashes are
mixed with a small amount of
oil to create a good smudging
mixture.
What is Lent? Early Chris-

tians baptized new Christians
on Easter Sunday. There was
a period of study, prayer and
fasting prior to Easter Sunday.
The number of days varies
throughout Church history,
but currently it is 46 days> 40
fasting days and 6 feast days
(Sundays). The 40 fasting
days remind us of the 40 days
that Jesus fasted in the desert
in preparation for beginning
his ministry.
Lent is a time for preparation
for us as well. We are to reflect
on our sinful nature and our
role in why Jesus died for us.
And we are to seek out Christ
in prayer, repentance, reflec
tion, and meditation. Many
modern Christians observe
Lent by either giving some
thing up (i.e. sweets, meat,
internet, etc.) or by taking on
new disciplines (i.e. special
bible studies, community out
reach, etc.).
I pray that this Lenten Sea
son proves to be meaningful
and important to you all. Fa

ers said. “However, when it
changes states, it releases 144
BTUs.”
It also takes energy to put
the 144 BTUs into it in order
to melt the ice.
Continually, adding water
through overhead sprinklers,
kept the ice at about 31 degrees
Fahrenheit, even while the
outside temperature dipped to
18 degrees.
“It’s called the Latent Heat
of Fusion,” Myers said.
Somewhere along the line
of 30 years of growing, Myers
began using a formula to deter
mine when to begin watering
plants, he said. He didn’t wait
until temperatures reached 32
degrees over the weekend to
begin watering. He keeps his
eye on dew points.
“This time we started at 37
degrees,” he said. “I turned on
the sprinklers because the dew
Continued from front
point was so low, it was down
to about 10.”
Dew points are connected to
relative humidity, he said. The
dry system over the weekend
came out of the North, aggra
vating the situation.
The rule of thumb, Myers
said, is that he takes the dew
point and subtracts it from 32,
the temperature at which water
freezes. Then he takes a third
of the difference and adds it
to 32, to determine the critical
point at which he needs to turn
on the sprinklers.
For example, if a dew point
is 20, then he subtracts it from
32. Then he divides 12 by 3
and adds 4 to 32 to get 36. He
begins watering at 36 degrees.
Speaking like a scientist,
Myers proves that farming is
more than just planting seeds
and picking fruit.

STAND STRONG WHEN THE DEVIL
STRIKES
Remember what theAmalekites did
to you along the way when you came
out of Egypt. 18 When you were weary
and worn out, they met you on your
journey and attacked all who were
lagging behind. Deuteronomy 25:17-18 (NIV)
As the Israelites journeyed to their promised land, the
Amalekites struck them. Be aware, Saint, that the devil will
attack you when you are about to experience a breakthrough
or a new spiritual level. He does not want you to have the
blessing of your commitment to Christ; in fact, it threatens
him. He neither wants Jesus to enjoy His inheritance in
you, so he seeks to destroy it. Though the devil seeks to
devour you, that doesn’t mean he will. Remain conscious
of the various ways Satan works and be on guard to your
circumstances and to yourself.
When you are emotionally weary, you allow evil to pounce.
Refresh your soul with praise and strengthen yourself in the
Word and in prayer. The Lord gives His beloved sleep, so
make sure you’re getting enough of it. Retire and recharge
your body with eight hours of rest. Eight is the number of
new beginnings, so you have a fresh start to your day when
you rise.
Don’t make a mistake as some Israelites did and lollygag
toward your maturity in Christ. Desire to grow in the
knowledge of the Lord, for without it, you cannot navigate
the twists and turns of this life. Stay in the thick of things in
your faith community by being a vital part of it. The Body of
Christ is where you grow. Aconsistent, intimate relationship
with the Holy Spirit will keep you in fellowship with both
God and man. Never isolate yourself spiritually lest you find
yourself desolate.
Satan is a persistent foe; though he leaves you, he will come
again. The devil tested Jesus sorely and faced defeat each
time. He left him until an opportune moment emerged. It is
the same with us, saints. Always stay prepared!
