Youth livestock projects
have played an active role in
the success of our local stu
dents for several years. The
purpose of organizations like
4-H are to develop leadership,
life skills and citizenship for
its members. Students who
exhibit youth livestock projects
also develop social skills, good
character, work ethic and re
sponsibility. The culmination
of months of hard work and
practice payed off for Burke
students at the Georgia Junior
National Livestock Show in
Perry. This four-day event is
the state livestock show for 4-H
and FFA students, which was
held February 23-26,2022.
Nine youth representing
Burke County 4-H partici
pated in shows throughout
the winter months to prepare
for the state show. The Burke
County 4-H Show Team is
currently comprised of two
species for the winter season:
dairy heifers and breeding
ewes. Participants with dairy
heifers include: Jiles Coble,
Sydney Coble, Liam Edenfield,
Abby Joyner, Erin Rivers,
Holt Sapp, Sara Morgan Sapp
and Emree Williams. These
exhibitors showed 27 dairy
heifers total. The group had 3rd
place County Group of Five.
Cole Edenfield also exhibited
2 breeding ewes to finish out
the weekend.
Seven youth submitted re
cord books for their dairy
projects and placed in the top
five for their age group. Holt
Sapp placed 1st, Sydney Coble
placed 2nd, Jiles Coble placed
3rd and Erin Rivers placed 5th
in the senior division, while
Liam Edenfield placed 1st,
Sara Morgan Sapp placed 2nd,
and Emree Williams placed 4th
in the junior division.
Each of the kids excelled in
their classes with numerous
accomplishments and awards,
representing Burke County
well. We are very proud of our
students for giving their time
and dedication to their spring
livestock projects. If you would
like more information about
exhibiting a livestock project
in the fall, please contact the
Burke County Extension Of
fice at 706-554-2119.
