EBA tennis team completes
first month’s matches
Edmund Burke Academy
started its tennis season with a
scrimmage on March 3 against
Faith Christian. The team, con
sisting of 18 girls and one boy,
played some mixed singles and
doubles matches against FCA
as well as inter-squad matches.
“It was a good scrimmage that
prepared us for our hrst region
match as well as showed areas
that we needed to work on
moving forward,” said Tennis
Coach Jamie Montgomery
The first region match
of the season was against
Thomas Jefferson Academy
on March 7. EBA hosted TJA
at the Burke County Recre
ation Dept. Tennis Complex,
where the school practices
and plays all its matches. The
team “played great and won
the match overall with an 11-1
set record. Strong play by both
our singles and doubles teams
helped to secure the win for
EBA. A feisty doubles team for
TJ fought back in the second
set for EBA's only loss of the
day, said Coach Montgomery.
EBA travelled to Augusta
Prep on Tuesday, March 8, but
the match was rescheduled due
to rain.
EBA travelled to Brent
wood Academy in Sandersville
on Tuesday, March 15. Rain
threatened, but all the region
matches were completed as
well as a few alternate matches
between the beginner players
for both schools. Brentwood,
as state runners-up in tennis
for girls and state champions in
boys, proved to be a challenge
for EBA. “Brentwood does a
good job with ball placement
and serving and won the match
overall. This was a good match
for all our players to show
areas that need work. Blake
Reddick had the best match
of the day with good volleys
and ball placement,” stated
Montgomery.
EBA hosted Briarwood
Academy on Thursday, March
17. Strong play by both the
girl's singles and doubles team
gave EBA the overall win.
Blake Reddick played a tough
first set but rallied in the second
set to beat Briarwood's number
two player. “Due to our large
squad, we have been playing
inter-squad matches at every
home match. Much improve
ment is being made by the
younger players,” according
to Coach Montgomery. “With
EBA losing 5 seniors next
year, we are in good shape to
continue our success with the
younger players”.
EBA travelled to Eatonton
on Monday, march 21 and
found perfect tennis weather.
Avery Wiggins lost a tough
first set against Gatewood's
Taylor Hebesy. Taylor has a
strong hrst serve and nice ball
placement. After adjusting to
Taylor’s serve, Avery won the
second set handily with an 8-2
victory.
Although he lost the hrst set,
Blake Reddick played a good
match against Gatewood's
number one player. Blake, as
a freshman and the only boy,
is gaining valuable court time
by playing against older and
more experienced players in
the region. He won the second
set 8-1 against Gatewood's
Parker Rainey. Even with the
two losses, EBA won the match
overall for the day.
EBA hosted John Hancock
on Tuesday, March 22. With
a very young team for John
Hancock, EBA was able to
win the overall matches 12-
0. “We were able to work on
ball placement and serves in
some of these matches, as
well as net play. We have been
able to implement more net
play and more court time for
our intersquad teams. With 9
freshman on our team, they are
taking advantage of this extra
court time and really improv
ing, said Coach Montgomery.”
For the last region home
match, EBA hosted Monsignor
Donovan of Athens on March
24. Seniors, Alaina Boulineau,
Christine Eberly, May May
Fu, Erin Glisson and Avery
Wiggins, were honored before
match play. With only 2 girls
and 4 boys for Mon Don, EBA
played some mixed singles and
doubles matches as well as the
3 region matches. EBA won
the regions matches and was
able to get some good court
experience in with the mixed
matches. “Our senior girls have
provided good leadership and
encouragement to the younger
players. Their presence will be
sorely missed next year as they
embark on their next steps,”
Montgomery stated.
The region tournament will
be held at Brentwood Academy
for boys on Monday, April
11 and for girls on Thursday,
April 14.

BCHS participated in its
hrst track meet of the season

outstanding job of competing
in all the events. As a coaching
staff we felt like they gave us
all they had and that's definitely
all we can ask for. They were
very excited about being able
to compete in front of the home

improvements from them in
each event as the season pro

BC Bears Tennis team
continues its region run
Brannon Braddock
Jbraddo4@gmail.com
BCHS Tennis continues
to mow over its opponents.
On March 22 they had their
third region match of the year
against Thomson High School.
Both the girls and the boys won
their matches. The girls beat
Thomson 3-2 and the boys
won 5-0.
The girls finished their
matches 2-1 in singles and 1-1
in doubles. Both Kyleigh Egan
and Josalyn Roberts won their
singles matches. Egan defeated
Madison Hathaway in two
sets while Roberts was forced
into a third set for her victory.
Madison Martin and Kennedy
Roberts also went to a third set,
but they ultimately secured a
Lady Bears victory by winning
their last set 6-4.
For the boys, all singles and
doubles matches were victo
ries. We continue to see strong
outings from Sam Eckerman,
Jacob Boothe, and Keegan Mc
Donald, Burke County’s boys’
singles players. All three were
able to win at least one set 6-0,
with Keegan McDonald win
ning both of his sets 6-0.
Additionally, the boys’ dou
bles teams put on quite a per
formance. Both Ryan Morris
and Ethan Coalson and Ethan
Mooneyham and Jacob Curtis
won their doubles matches with
two perfect 6-0 sets.
The Bears were supposed
to have another match against
Hephzibah last Thursday, but it
was forfeited due to Hephzibah
not having two match-ready
teams. So what lies ahead for
the Bears tennis team? While
there are no stats to report just
yet, the Bears had a region
match yesterday against Mor
gan County, and they round
out the season tomorrow with
a home match against ARC out
of Augusta. The ultimate goal
of the tennis team is to make
it to the region tournament.
While there is no set date at the
moment, the region tournament
will be played on or before
April 14. In the hopes of not
jinxing their chances, the odds
of Burke County hosting the
tournament at home are high.
Ramirez leads BCHS in
third win over Thomson
Burke County’s varsity base
ball team ran off with the lead
late in the game in a 15-9 vic
tory over Thomson on Friday.
Burke County trailed 7-6 in
the top of the hfth inning when
Beckam Ramirez doubled on
a 2-1 count, scoring two runs.
Burke County was boosted
by Ramirez who went 4-for-6
at the plate. He singled in the
fourth, doubled in the fifth,
singled in the sixth, and singled
in the seventh.
In the top of the fourth in
ning, BCHS tied things up at
three. Burke County Varsity
Bears scored one run when
Ramirez singled.
Thomson scored four runs in
the fourth inning. Storm Hunt,
Matthew Dena, and Jalik John
son each had RBIs in the frame.
Phillip Hodges was the win
ning pitcher for the Bears. The
right hander surrendered four
runs on hve hits over three in
nings, striking out two. Aiden
Roberson, Jahkari Howard,
and Hunter Carroll all put
in work in relief out of the
bullpen.
Dalton Gregen, who lasted
three innings, allowing four
hits and two runs, took the loss
for Thomson.
Burke County tallied 15
hits. Ramirez, Seth Meador,
Marshall Flowers, and Owen
Adams each collected multiple
hits.
Thomson tallied ten hits
in the game with Dena and
Ashton Perry each managing
multiple hits.
Head basebeall Coach Billy
Marchman issued the follow
ing statement after the three-
game sweep of Thomson.
“We bounced back after a
tough series offensively the
week before against Harlem to
sweep Thomson, picking up 3
region wins.
We struggled the week be
fore to get timely hits and just
could not get guys across the
plate, but after a few hard nose
days of practicing some flaws
and changing some mental
plate approaches, this group
of men responded with 33
hits over the 3 games against
Thomson. They did an out
standing job as a collective
group posting a .397 team
batting average and scoring
31 runs.
I am so proud of them for
bouncing back by not making
excuses and wanting to put a
bad week in the past by just
moving forward. This series
changed the way I feel about
their toughness. Behind closed
doors on a practice held, they
took the critiques and worked
on their weaknesses together.
We have all our goals still
in place as we play at Hep
hzibah this Tuesday at 5:30
and at home this Friday with
a doubleheader starting at
5:00 for 3 more region games
before we take off a little time
for Spring Break. We also
travel to Jefferson County this
Wednesday at 5:30 pm to play
a non-region game. It will be
a packed week of baseball and
then they will get a chance
to rejuvenate while allowing
for some mental and physical
rest.”
